Player Attack is an Australian video game news website and TV series,[1] launched in 2010 and 2013[2] respectively. Originally named GamePron,[3] the site was created by industry veterans Jessica Citizen and Kingsley Foreman to "fill a niche" in games media.[4]
History
The website was designed to present aggregated gaming news, originally through a daily post known as "The Pron Stash", and later as a video series, GamePron News - a 5-minute long vidcast released on Fridays. Following the rebrand as Player Attack,[5] the weekly news was expanded to 10 minutes, recapping the latest and most interesting in the world of video games. This popular series racked up more than one million views in three years, and was described as "sort of like watching a Japanese game show without the garishly goofy gimmickry".[6]
2013 saw Player Attack named as a finalist in the Video Publication of the Year category at the 2013 MCV Pacific Awards.,[7] as well as shortlisted in the 11th Annual Microsoft IT Journalism Awards (the Lizzies), for Best Gaming Coverage, Best Independent Media and Best Video Program.[8]
Website
As GamePron, Player Attack was the first site to break the news of the StarCraft match-fixing scandal of 2010. The eSports story quickly made it out of specialist gaming press and into mainstream media, with the site mentioned by name on BBC News.[9] In addition to a daily news service, Player Attack also features a comprehensive File Library,[10] regularly updated with the latest demos, patches, videos, screenshots and full clients.
Television series
In 2013, Player Attack the web series expanded to become Player Attack the TV series,[11] with weekly half-hour episodes screening on Australian cable channel Aurora[12] and Face TV in New Zealand. Each episode features recent games industry news, as well as reviews and interviews with industry personalities.
The first season includes a retrospective on the video games of the 90s, presented by Jimmy "the Geek" Reilly, a former contestant on Beauty and the Geek Australia.
Public appearances
Both Reilly and host Jessica Citizen appeared on controversial panel at the inaugural PAX AUS, "Is there such a thing as a fake geek?"[13] Jessica also hosted the main stage at Adelaide's AVCon in July 2013,[14] working with guests Jessica Nigri, Spike Spencer and Chris Cason.
