Philippa "Pippa" Malmgren is an American policy analyst. She served as Special Assistant to the President of the United States for Economic Policy on the National Economic Council and former member of the U.S. President's Working Group on Financial Markets. She is the founder of the DRPM Group and co-founder of H Robotics.

Early life and education

Malmgren is the daughter of Harald Malmgren, a trade negotiator who served in the administrations of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford. She has a B.A. from Mount Vernon College and an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. She has also participated in the Harvard Program on National Security.

Career

Malmgren started her career as Trade Policy Specialist with the Trade Policy Research Centre in London and the OECD in Paris. She subsequently began a successful career in banking including heading the Global Asset Management business for Bankers Trust in Asia, out of Hong Kong, Deputy Chief Currency Strategist for Bankers Trust Company, and finally Head of Global Investment Strategy at UBS Warburg in London, England. Following her career in banking, she founded Malmgren and Company, operating out of London, England.

Malmgren served as an advisor on international economic issues to George W. Bush during his presidential campaign. She joined the Bush White House, where she served as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy on the National Economic Council and was a member of the President's Working Group on Financial Markets and the President's Working Group on Corporate Governance. While in the White House, she was responsible for all financial market issues for the President, which included corporate governance, bank regulation, Government Sponsored Enterprises, mortgages, deposit insurance, terrorism insurance issues, anti-money laundering, and international finance issues. She was a member of the White House Office of the Homeland Defense Working Group on Terrorism Risks to the Economy.

Following her time in office, Malmgren founded the Canonbury Group, through which she has served as an advisor to some of the leading asset managers around the world including traditional fund managers, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds, pension plans, corporations, financial institutions, and family offices. Following the turmoil of the Financial Crisis, Malmgren felt there was a void in the asset management business and co-founded Principalis Asset Management.^[1]

Malmgren is an author and public commentator. In addition to writing her quarterly publication Policy and Markets, she has a column in Investment Week. She has been a frequent guest on CNN, CNBC, and BBC and been a regular speaker at investor and business conferences including Fortune's Most Powerful Women in Business, the World Economic Forum, Euromoney, and institutional investor conferences, the Confederation of British Industries Annual Meeting, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Business Leaders Annual Meeting, the Cercle des Economistes, and various banking, asset management and industry annual meetings.

She serves on the advisory board at MIT and Indiana University. She has lectured at INSEAD, TSINGHUA University, Duke University and LSE. She was named a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2000.^[2] She has served on the Board of Advisors of the Oxford Banking Forum, Mount Vernon College, the Aspen Institute in France, and the World Economic Forum Environment Project. She has lectured at the London School of Economics, Tsinghua University in Beijing, the MIT Sloan Fellows, Oxford University, West Point, and Duke University Business School.
