Pinyin (disambiguation)

Pinyin (Chinese: 拼音; pinyin: pīnyīn) is a system of romanization for the languages of China, where pin means "spell" and yin means "sound". It can refer to several transcription systems:

• For the varieties of Chinese:
  • Hanyu Pinyin (Hànyǔ pīnyīn, 汉语拼音), what most people mean when referring to pinyin: the official romanization system for Standard Chinese in the People's Republic of China and official in the Republic of China since 01-01-2009
  • Tongyong Pinyin (Tōngyòng Pīnyīn, 通用拼音), a derivative of Hanyu Pinyin used officially in the Republic of China (Taiwan) between 2002 and 2008
