Pierre Kemp

Pierre Kemp (1 December 1886 – 21 July 1967) was a Dutch writer. He was the recipient of the Constantijn Huygens Prize in 1956 and the P. C. Hooft Award in 1958. His younger brother was the writer Mathias Kemp. He was born in Maastricht and died there in 1967. In Limburg, the county where he was born, people made fun out of his surname. In several dialects of Dutch and the regional Limburgian language, 'kemp' (as 'kennep' and general Dutch 'hennep') is the ordinary term for the cannabis plant, of which the stems used to be intertwined into ropes though which is nowadays rather known for its leaves as marijuana and thus no longer freely grown.
