"Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You!" is a special episode of the animated television series Phineas and Ferb. and is part of the second season. It was aired on Disney XD on August 2, 2010 and Disney Channel on August 6, 2010. It is the first one-hour special, beating Phineas and Ferb's Christmas Vacation which is 45 minutes long with commercials. This episode was first seen at Comic-Con on July 25 from 3pm to 4pm in San Diego, California.

Plot

It's the summer solstice, and Phineas feels bored after he and Ferb have accomplished much throughout the summer. For a taste of adventure, the duo and their friends decide to travel around the world at the same speed as the Earth's rotation, so as to make a complete 24 hour day, in an effort to create the "biggest, longer, funnest summer day of all time". But not everyone believes they can actually achieve what they've set out to do, leading them to get some encouraging words, in the form of a duet, from Clay Aiken and Chaka Khan ("I Believe We Can"). Also, they make a bet with Buford: if they succeed he'll give everyone back the bikes he's stolen from them over the years, if they fail, they have to do nothing for the rest of the summer. In order to ensure this bet, Buford joins them as does Candace as she wants to go to Paris and see Jeremy.

Meanwhile, Dr. Doofenshmirtz takes a father-daughter trip to Tokyo with Vanessa. At first, Vanessa is amazed, but is later distraught to find out that her father has brought in a captured Major Monogram and has been making a plan to ruin the International Good Guy Convention with a giant water balloon and frame Monogram for it. She then accuses her father of always putting his work before her relationship with him, and decides to leave for Paris on her own. Around the same time, Perry catches wind of Monogram's whereabouts after hearing of a suspicious note sent to the O.W.C.A. (presumably sent by Doofenshmirtz).

In Tokyo, the gang meets with Stacy's cousins and sing "JPOP (Welcome To Tokyo)" while getting vegetable oil used as fuel. While there, Vanessa joins with the group after being accidentally knocked off the Tokyo Tower by the giant balloon thanks to the intervention of an arriving Perry. Fearing for Vanessa's safety, Doofenshmirtz decides to abandon his plan and opts to rescue her, and Perry and Major Monogram are forced to help him.

The gang flies to the Himalayas, home of the rarely seen Klimpaloon, a magical old-timey bathing suit. There, the wings of the jet are broken off, so a giant ball of rubber bands, acquired from Baljeet's Uncle Sabu ("Rubber Bands, Rubber Balls") is used to bounce around the world ("Bouncin' Around the World"). Around the same time, Doofenshmirtz picks up on Vanessa's location, having equipped her earrings with a GPS tracking system, allowing him, Perry, and Monogram to follow the track.

In Paris, a jealous Candace sees Jeremy with a bunch of boys and girls and leaves. Isabella is upset as Phineas is completely oblivious to her feelings for him even in Paris ("City of Love"). On the top of the Eiffel Tower, Ferb consults with a depressed Vanessa about her relationship with her father, telling her to try and meet him halfway in their relationship by socializing more. Ferb walks away for a moment; then Doofenshmirtz, Perry, and Major Monogram come to rescue her. Vanessa is initially upset at her father bringing 'work' again, but Doofenshmirtz complains of all the trouble and the help he needed from Perry and Monogram to travel halfway around the world to rescue Vanessa for her sake. It was then Vanessa realized that Doofenshmirtz's trying to meet her halfway in their relationship, just as Ferb explained. Touched by this and understanding how much he went through, Vanessa reconciles with her father and leaves with him while bidding farewell to Ferb, who is left heartbroken with a flower in his hand that was meant for her. Meanwhile, Buford is able to charm what they need out of the Parisians without threats by speaking fluent French. Ultimately, they turn the plane into a boat and leave, but not before Jeremy and Candace encounter each other, refer to each other as boyfriend and girlfriend and nearly kiss before Candace gets too far away ("Follow the Sun").

Meanwhile, back in Paris, Doofenshmirtz thanks Perry and Major Monogram for helping him rescue Vanessa, but they just arrest him in response, presumably for kidnapping Monogram and attempting to ruin the International Good Guy Convention. They now intend to put Doofenshmirtz away to prison for 10–20 years, but Vanessa intervenes by using her hairdryer as a pistol to stop them, allowing both herself and Doofenshmirtz to escape by stealing Perry's hoverjet to continue their vacation. During their escape, Vanessa finally admits that she may be "a little evil" (this was more evident when Vanessa stole a scooter for herself and Ferb to get to the Eifel Tower earlier), leaving her dad to be extremely proud of her, crying in tears of joy. Despite being dismayed of seeing Doofenshmirtz and his daughter escape, Monogram decides to let this one behind and happily goes off to take a revue, leaving an upset Perry on his own.

The group crashes on a desert island, which possesses only two palm trees and a big fat ox and the boat disintegrates leaving only the seats. After a desperate attempt to find a way, Phineas finally gives up and sits down to watch the sunset with Isabella like she wants, but she encourages him and he gets the idea to use Ferb's giant map as a massive paper airplane. Phineas then thanks Isabella for inspiring him by giving her a hug, telling her she's the best. Using it, they cross 2,000 miles and get within five blocks of home, but have to cross a giant pit (that was made because of some construction work in the neighborhood) with 58 seconds left. Realizing they're in front of his house, Buford, who changed his mind and wants Phineas and Ferb to succeed, gives everyone back their bikes (and Candace a tricycle he stole) and the group is able to jump the pit using a makeshift ramp and arrive home with a second to spare. The parents arrive home too, but for once Candace says nothing as she enjoyed herself. The group throws a party where Phineas, Isabella, Ferb and even Candace sing "Summer Belongs To You", (explaining the title), and Jeremy arrives home early to finally kiss Candace. Though it may seem that everything turned out well for everyone for the whole day, the group wonders where Perry is, as it turns out, Perry is still in Paris, now ordering in a restaurant with a date following Doofenshmirtz and Vanessa's escape.

Cultural references

During the song, "City of Love", Phineas can briefly be seen standing in front of the famous French Cabaret, Moulin Rouge while holding a pinwheel, most likely envisioning the use of the windmill on top as a propeller. This episode also pays homage to the popular Japanese dance tone "Caramelldansen" in which Stacy's relatives encourage Phineas and Ferb to participate in a dance and tune similar to the smash hit. Also in one part of the song, Isabella is seen waving a leek in her hand, similarly to Loituma Girl in the popular video known as "Leekspin" on YouTube.[1] Phineas is also seen digging up a yellow sponge and a pink starfish in the episode, as a reference to Spongebob Squarepants.

Reception

On its Disney Channel premiere, 3.862 million viewers watched it with 22% of kids 2-11, 13% of teens, 5% of households, and 3% of adults 18-49, also being the #1 program on that night and it was 25th for the week in viewership.[2][3] On Disney XD, the episode ranked in the channel’s top 3 telecasts of the year in viewers with 1.32 million, and Boys 6-11 with 365,000, with a 2.9 rating. The hour telecast on August 2, 2010 is currently the Emmy-winning animated series’ No. 2 telecast of all time on Disney XD in Total Viewers, in kids 6-14 with 677,000 and a 1.9 rating, Boys 6-14 with 435,000 and a 2.3 rating, and kids 6-11 with 542,000 and a 2.2 rating, Boys 6-11 and Boys 9-14 235,000 with a 1.9 rating, behind only December 2009’s “Phineas and Ferb's Christmas Vacation.” [4]
