Phillip Tanner (born August 8, 1988) is an American football running back for the San Francisco 49ers. Tanner played college football at Middle Tennessee State University.
Professional career
Dallas Cowboys
Tanner signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2011.[1][2][3] In August 21, 2011, Tanner and the Cowboys played against the San Diego Chargers at Cowboys Stadium where on the second half of the game Tanner lost his helmet and scored a touchdown. A new rule declined the touchdown saying that any player receiving, running, or intercepting carrying the ball and loses the helmet during the play, is where the ball will be played dead once the helmet has hit the field floor.[4]
Tanner recorded his first NFL carry and touchdown on October 23, 2011 against the St. Louis Rams.
On December 9, 2011, he was placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury.
In February 2014, the Cowboys stated they would not offer Tanner a restricted free agent tender, which enabled him to hit the free agent market.[5]
Indianapolis Colts
On July 29, 2014, Tanner was signed by the Indianapolis Colts[6][7] He was released on August 20, 2014.
Dallas Cowboys
On August 27, 2014 Tanner was re-signed by the Dallas Cowboys.[8]
Buffalo Bills
On October 21, 2014, Tanner was signed by the Buffalo Bills after an injury to C. J. Spiller.[9] He was released in November.
San Francisco 49ers
On December 17, 2014, Tanner was signed by the San Francisco 49ers.[10]
