Phillip Rhys (born 14 June 1974) is an English actor, director.
Early life
He was born in Upper Norwood, South London, the second of three sons.[1] After graduating from Westminster College he spent a year living and working in Paris. He returned to London to study acting with Marianna Hill at the Lee Strasberg Institute,[1] and later with Jeffrey Tambor and Milton Katselas at the Beverly Hills Playhouse in Los Angeles.
Film and television career
His film work includes The Adventures of Tintin directed by Steven Spielberg and The Magnificent Eleven, co-written by Irvine Welsh. Rhys starred in Wilde Salome, a film written and directed by Al Pacino who also played the lead. Pivotal television roles in the Emmy winning series, 24 (season 2) for which he received a SAG ensemble nomination, FX's Golden Globe winning Nip/Tuck and BBC’s, post-apocalyptic hit drama Survivors. Other credits include “Flatland” with Dennis Hopper which was produced by Academy Award Winner Al Ruddy (“The Godfather”). “Flatland” was the first US TV show to be shot entirely in Mainland China. Alongside his extensive television work, Rhys is known on the independent film circuit with roles in such films as Punks,[2] Woundings (with Ray Winstone and Guy Pearce), Kill the Man, in which he co-starred with independent film regular Luke Wilson, Americanizing Shelley, and Fathers and Sons, directed by Rodrigo García. Rhys also starred as intergalactic rock star Proto Zoa in the hugely successful Disney-produced Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century (film) series of films[3][4] and as Tanus, the Egyptian warrior, in the miniseries The Seventh Scroll, based on the best selling novel by Wilbur Smith. He has also appeared in single episodes of Bones, Glee, CSI and NCIS, amongst others. Rhys is a Sundance Institute alumni.
Directing career
Rhys has directed several documentary shorts over the years and recently produced and directed his first narrative short film, The Scarecrow. It stars Darren Pettie, Sandra Oh and Sandra Seacat.
Stage career
On stage, he received outstanding reviews for his performance in Dario Fo's The Devil with Boobs and a Drama-Logue Award for his role in the Los Angeles stage production of Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. Other performances include "John Buchanan Jr." in Tennessee Williams Summer and Smoke and a turn in John Patrick Shanley's The Dreamer Examines His Pillow at Theatre West.
Charity work
He is involved in various non-profit and extra curricular organizations including the E.S.L. Educational Programs for Adults, BAFTA LA Outreach and is an Inner City Shakespeare Advisory Board Member.
Personal life
On 22 November 2008, Rhys appeared on Soccer AM and confirmed he supports Crystal Palace Football Club. He speaks fluent French and has traveled extensively. Phillip is a former member of the alternative rock band Egos Aside. Rhys now lives in London and Los Angeles.
