The first ever elections to Philippine Senate were held on October 3, 1916 immediately after the passage of the Philippine Autonomy Act, known as the Jones Law. The Act replaced the appointed Philippine Commission which was the upper house of the Philippine Legislature, with the an elected Philippine Senate. After this election, the Philippines had a fully elected national legislative branch for the first time, with the House of Representatives and the Senate forming a bicameral legislature.
