Major-General Philip George Saxon Gregson-Ellis CB OBE (1898–1956) was a British Army officer who commanded 5th Division.
Military career
Gregson-Ellis was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1917 towards the end of World War I.[1] He was appointed an instructor at the Staff College, Camberley in 1937.[2] He served in World War II as General Staff Officer with the British Expeditionary Force before becoming Commanding Officer of 2nd Bn Grenadier Guards in 1940.[2] He continued his war service as a Brigadier General on the staff in Northern Ireland from 1941 and as Deputy Chief of Staff for Home Forces in 1942 before being made Commander of 30th Armoured Brigade and then Commander of 1st Brigade in 1943.[2] The latter appointment took him to North Africa.[2] He was appointed General Officer Commanding 5th Division in 1944 and saw service in Italy.[2]
After the War he returned to the Staff College, Camberley as Commandant and then went back to 5th Division for a second tour as its Commander.[2] He was appointed General Officer Commanding 44th Division in 1947 and retired in 1950.[2]
Family
In 1921 he married Joan Henllys Lloyd.[3]
