Phantom (stylized as PHANTOM) (Korean: 팬텀) is a South Korea-based hip hop trio consisting of three members: Kiggen, Sanchez and Hanhae. They are managed by Brand New Music and Kim Do-hoon (김도훈)'s WA Entertainment. The group has released three single albums and two mini-albums: Phantom City & Phantom Theory. On 19 May 2014, the group released its first full-length album entitled Phantom Power.[1]

Career

Pre-debut

Sanchez and Kiggen used to work under E-Tribe's Happy Face Entertainment prior to signing with Brand New Music, the latter under the name of "HybReFine," an electronic music project. Kiggen released a studio album on 3 September 2010 called "2010 - Vol. 1." Sanchez was featured in the single "Cosmic Dance" and its accompanying music video.[2] Hanhae was a former Block B trainee under Stardom Entertainment before he joined Brand New Music. He had also been featured in numerous songs in Block B's Zico's mix tapes.

On the 21 August 2011, South Korean rapper and label mate Verbal Jint released the music video teaser for the single "You Look Good," which featured Sanchez being slapped in the face by K-pop singer NS Yoon-G.[3] On the 30th, the whole music video was released. It featured Sanchez and NS Yoon-G alongside Verbal Jint, as well as Hanhae and Kiggen playing secondary roles.[4]

On 7 September, Phantom released their first work together as a project band: a medley arrangement of songs banned by the South Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF). The medley was entitled "19 Song (Love Songs That Teens Cannot Listen To) (청소년이 들으면 안되는 사랑노래)" and contained the "provocative" lyrics in banned songs, including TVXQ‘s "Mirotic", Seungri's "Strong Baby", Exhibit's "Truth in Alcohol", DJ DOC‘s "I’m This Kind of Person (나이런사람이야 뮤직비디오)", Vibe’s "Alcohol (술이야)", 2PM‘s "Hands Up", GD & TOP‘s "Knock Out" and "Don’t Go Home" and 10 cm‘s "Americano."[5]

In November 2011 Phantom uploaded a YouTube video entitled “Freddie ‘Phantom’ Mercury Singing The Boys (SNSD)”, which featured member Sanchez emulating Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury while singing a part of the song “The Boys” by South Korean girl group Girls' Generation.[6] Another video was uploaded to entitled “KR/NZ/JP Tripartite Conference (한.뉴.일3자회담)”,[7] which featured the three members rapping along a hip hop base.

On November 24, Phantom announced that they would release their first single album, Hole In Your Face (얼굴 뚫어지겠다) on 25 November.[8]

The music video teaser was released that same day on their official YouTube channel.[9] It displayed a young girl shaken with fear and then shot in the head by a gun. It was immediately swept with controversy over the cruelty of that scene, which eventually led them to create a censored music video in black and white. The single was released the next day and on the 27th, the whole music video was uploaded.[10]

Debut

A representative of their company stated the group was going to make their official debut with a mini album in the beginning of 2012 and that Hole In Your Face was only a "teaser" to that debut.[11]

On 14 December, Verbal Jint released a music video for his song "Thank You (감사감사)", where scenes for the "You Look Good" music video and 'Looks Even Better' concert featuring the three Phantom members are shown.[12] Four days later, on 18 December, Verbal Jint held an exclusive concert at Seoul's Club TA and Phantom also performed there.[13]

On 26 December, Phantom performed at a subsidiary record label Absalute Music's concert at the Rolling Hall Club located it Seoul's Hongdae district. On 3 January, Phantom won the "Rookie of the Month" award through the Cyworld Digital Music Awards for the month of December, even though they hadn't officially debuted yet.[14]

On 26 January, Verbal Jint released the music video for his single "Classic", as part of a sports brand Reebok's promotional campaign. The three members of Phantom appeared in the music video: Sanchez and Hanhae dancing next to a jukebox and Kiggen manipulating a DJ turntable.[15]

On 19 February, Phantom performed at Brand New Music's 'Brand New Day vol. 1 (Verbal Jint and Friends)' concert alongside labelmates Verbal Jint, Skull, Bizniz, Swings, Nodo and Kollok Holmes at Seoul's V-Hall venue.[16] On 6 March, Absalute Music released the music video for his latest single "Let's Get It Poppin'" performed by the record company members Bizniz, NoS2ok and Baby K (a.k.a. Repus Meti). Images of the 'Brand New Day vol. 1 (Verbal Jint and Friends)' concert were shown, including Kiggen and Sanchez ones performing on stage.[17]

On 8 March, labelmate Skull released the music video for his latest single "쓰레기 (Trash) (feat. 옥상달빛)" where the three Phantom members made a cameo holding presents for the main girl in the music video.[18]

From 14 to 17 March, Verbal Jint held a national tour called 'More Like a Show' that consisted of three shows in the South Korean cities of Jeonju, Busan and Daegu. Phantom and Bizniz appeared as special guests in the Busan show 'White Day' that took place on 14 March.[19]

On 18 March, Phantom performed at labelmate Swing's 'The King Concert' with other guests as Giriboy, Vasco, Deepflow&Wutan, Geeks, Beenzino, Black Nut, 노창 and Skull with Just Band at Hongdae's Rolling Hall Club.[20]

On 7 July Phantom performed at the Cosmo Bikini Festival held by the South Korean edition of the Cosmopolitan magazine. The festival took place at the River Park swimming pool of the Sheraton Grande Walkerhill hotel located in Seoul's Gwangjin-gu district. The line-up was formed by Toxic, The Moonshiners, 10 cm, Verbal Jint, Phantom, UV and Mighty Mouth, among others.[21]

On 7 August, Phantom released the ballad "Seaweed Soup".[22]

Debut: Phantom City

Phantom released their first mini-album, Phantom City, on 16 August.[23]

On 21 August a video called "Phantom's 'Seaweed' Delivery - Davichi's Kang Min Kyung's part" was revealed. On 23 August Gaon Chart released the chart rankings for the week from 12 August to 18 August. Phantom reached the number 10 spot in the National Physical Albums Ranking chart.[24]

On 27 August Son Soo Kyung (aka Sue Son) released her first album I Am. The three Phantom members sang on the sixth track of the album, "Espresso Girl".

On 11 September, Mighty Mouth released the music video of their latest single "My Heart is Broken (feat. Im Yoon Taek of Ulala Session, Soul King)" in which various members of Brand New Music, including Phantom, appeared singing and dancing in a karaoke.
