Peter O'Mahony (born 17 September 1989 in Cork, Ireland) is an Irish rugby union player. He plays for Munster in the Pro12 and European Rugby Champions Cup and for Ireland internationally. O'Mahony can play across the Back-Row.

He won the 2009–10 AIB Cup with Cork Constitution, and was named Man-of-the-Match in the final.[1]

Munster

2009–10

O'Mahony made his Munster debut against Ulster on 2 January 2010.[2] He captained Munster A to the final of the inaugural British and Irish Cup in the 2009–10 season.[3]

2010–11

O'Mahony was promoted to a full development contract with Munster for the 2010–11 season. He was an integral part of the team when the internationals were away for the November Tests, putting in a big performance in Munster's historic 15–6 victory against Australia, a game which was also O'Mahony's first start for Munster.[4]

2011–12

O'Mahony captained Munster in their opening RaboDirect Pro12 match against Newport Gwent Dragons in September 2011,[5] and continued to captain Munster whilst the international contingent were away at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He made his Heineken Cup debut for Munster against Northampton Saints on 12 November 2011,[6] a game in which he won the Man-of-the-Match award.[7] He scored his first try for Munster on 19 November 2011, in Munster's second Heinken Cup Pool One game against Castres Olympique.[8] O'Mahony won the Munster Young Player of the Year for the 2011–12 season.[9] He captained Munster in their 2011–12 Pro 12 away play-off semi-final against Ospreys on 11 May 2012, which Munster lost 45–10.[10]

2012–13

O'Mahony started for Munster in their opening fixture of the 2012–13 Heineken Cup on 13 October 2012, a 22–17 defeat at the hands of Racing Métro 92.[11] He scored a try in their 33–0 win against Edinburgh in Round 2 on 21 October 2012.[12] He started in the 15–9 win against Saracens on 8 December 2012,[13] and also in the reverse fixture a week later, which Munster lost 19–13.[14] O'Mahony started against Edinburgh in the 26–17 Round 5 victory,[15] and also started in the crucial 29–6 win against Racing Métro 92 that secured Munster a place in the quarter-finals.[16] He signed a new two-year contract with the IRFU in January 2013, which will see him remain with Munster until at least the end of the 2014–15 season.[17] O'Mahony continued to start for Munster in the knockout-stage of the 2012–13 tournament, playing a crucial role in their 12–18 away quarter-final victory against Harlequins on 7 April 2013.[18] He also started the semi-final against ASM Clermont Auvergne on 27 April 2013, which Munster lost 16–10.[19]

2013–14

O'Mahony was named as the new Munster captain on 30 July 2013, replacing Doug Howlett, who retired at the end of the 2012–13 season.[20] He started for Munster against Edinburgh in the opening round of the 2013–14 Heineken Cup on 12 October 2013, captaining the side during their 29–23 defeat.[21] He moved to number 8 for Munster's second round game against Gloucester on 19 October 2013, which Munster won 26–10.[22] He started against USA Perpignan on 8 December 2013, captaining the side to a 36–8 win.[23] O'Mahony started the reverse fixture away to Perpignan on 14 December 2013.[24] He started the 7–20 away win against Gloucester on 11 January 2013, scoring a try in a win that secured quarter-final qualification.[25] O'Mahony started against Edinburgh on 19 January 2014, scoring a try in the 38–6 Round 6 win that secured a home quarter-final.[26] O'Mahony started in Munster's 47-23 Heineken Cup quarter-final win against Toulouse on 5 April 2014, but went off with a shoulder injury in the 18th minute.[27] The injury meant O'Mahony was ruled out of the remainder of the season as he had to have reconstructive surgery on his shoulder.[28] O'Mahony was nominated for the IRUPA Players' Player of the Year 2014 award on 23 April 2014.[29] O'Mahony also had surgery on his right shoulder to repair a long-standing issue.[30]

2014–15

O'Mahony returned from injury on 4 October 2014, coming on as a replacement against Leinster.[31] He started in Munster's first European Rugby Champions Cup game against Sale Sharks on 18 October 2014.[32] O'Mahony started against Saracens F.C. in Round 2 of the Champions Cup on 24 October 2014.[33] He started against ASM Clermont Auvergne on 6 December 2014.[34] O'Mahony also started in the reverse fixture against Clermont on 14 December 2014.[35] He started against Saracens on 17 January 2015.[36] O'Mahony started at Number 8 against Sale Sharks on 25 January 2015.[37] O'Mahony signed a new three-year contract with Munster and the IRFU in February 2015, which will see him remain with the province until at least June 2018.[38]

Ireland

Under-Age

He has captained Ireland at Under-18 and Under-20 levels.[39]

2011–12

O'Mahony was selected to train with Ireland's main 24-man squad for the first week of training for the 2012 Six Nations Championship.[40] He was then selected in the squad to train for the opening match against Wales,[41] and he was named on the bench for the match,[42] but did not come on during the game. O'Mahony made his debut for Ireland against Italy on 25 February 2012, coming on as a replacement for Sean O'Brien. He made his first start for Ireland in the game against Scotland on 10 March 2012, after an injury to Sean O'Brien.[43] O'Mahony won the IRUPA Young Player of the Year award for the 2011–12 season.[44]

He replaced Stephen Ferris as Ireland's Blinside flanker in the first test against New Zealand on 9 June 2012.[45] He came off the bench during the second test a week later.[46] He replaced Jamie Heaslip at Number 8 for Ireland in the third test, meaning he has now started for Ireland in all three back-row positions.[47]

2012–13

O'Mahony started at Blindside for Ireland against South Africa on 10 November 2012,[48] and also against Argentina on 24 November 2012.[49]

He was named in Ireland's training squad for the 2013 Six Nations Championship on 17 January 2013.[50] O'Mahony continued at Blindside in Ireland's opening 22–30 Six Nation win over Wales on 2 February 2013,[51] their defeat against England,[52] the loss to Scotland,[53] the draw with France,[54] and the defeat to Italy.[55]

O'Mahony was named in the Ireland squad for the 2013 Ireland tour to North America on 19 May 2013.[56] After Rory Best was called up to the 2013 British and Irish Lions squad, O'Mahony replaced him as captain for the tour.[57][58] He started against the USA on 8 June 2013, leading Ireland to a 15–12 victory in his first test as captain.[59] O'Mahony also captained Ireland to victory against Canada on 15 June 2013, his side winning 14–40.[60]

2013–14

On 23 October 2013, O'Mahony was named in the Ireland squad for the 2013 Autumn Tests.[61] He started against Samoa on 9 November 2013, a game in which O'Mahony scored his first try for Ireland.[62] O'Mahony started against Australia on 16 November 2013.[63] He also started against New Zealand on 24 November 2013.[64]

On 27 January 2014, O'Mahony was named in Ireland's 34-man squad for the opening two fixtures of the 2014 Six Nations Championship.[65] He started against Scotland on 2 February 2014.[66] O'Mahony started against Wales on 8 February 2014, earning the Man-of-the-Match award in Ireland's 26–3 win.[67] O'Mahony started in the 13–10 loss to England on 22 February 2014.[68] He was ruled out of the game against Italy due to shoulder and hamstring injuries.[69] O'Mahony returned from injury to start the 20–22 away win against France on 15 March 2014, a win that secured the 2014 Championship for Ireland.[70]

2014–15

O'Mahony was named in the Ireland squad for the 2014 Guinness Series on 21 October 2014.[71] He started in the 29-15 win against South Africa on 8 November 2014.[72] O'Mahony also started in the 26-23 win against Australia on 22 November 2014.[73]

He was named in the Ireland squad for the opening rounds of the 2015 Six Nations Championship on 1 February 2015.[74] O'Mahony started against Italy on 7 February 2015.[75] He started against France on 14 February 2015.[76] O'Mahony started in the 19-9 win against England on 1 March 2015.[77] He started against Wales on 14 March 2015.[78] O'Mahony started against Scotland on 21 March 2015.[79] England's failure to score enough points against France meant Ireland won the 2015 Six Nations Championship, the first time Ireland have won back-to-back championships since 1948-49.[80]
