Peter Lam

Peter Lam Kin-ngok (Chinese: 林建岳, born 1957), son of industrialist tycoon Lim Por-yen and his second wife, U Po-chu, is a well known HongKong business and entertainment magnate. He is the Chairman of Lai Sun development company, Lai Fung Holdings,[1] Hong Kong Tourism Board, and a director of e-sun holdings. He also owns Media Asia Entertainment Group and Clot Media Division.

Biography

Peter Lam Kin Ngok was born in Hong Kong, in 1957 to Guangdong Teoyeo descendants. He is the son of industrialist tycoon Lim Por-yen and his second wife, U Po-Chu, he has two brothers, Lam Kin Ming and Lam King Hong. At the age of thirteen, he got sent to Canada to study high school, after four years of studying he attend at University of Oregon and graduated in 1987. After his graduation, he went back and help his father, becoming the vice-chairman of Lai Sun Group.

In 1997, Lam purchases Furama hotel for 6.9 billion Hong Kong dollars to rebuild it even though the idea has been heavily banned by his father Lim Por-yen. Unfortunately it is during the time of Asian economic crisis struck, the property market nose-dived, in addition this forces Lai-Sun Group to borrow money from the back, because of this it leads to them be in debt of hundred billion Hong Kong dollars [2]

After this bad experience, Lam spends more time on his entertainment business, in 2002, the movie Internal Affairs which was produced by the company he owns has a huge success. This is the first step of him being the entertainment magnate after. In 2004, Lam and Hong Kong singer Leon Lai started a music group- Amusic which they recruit lots of famous Hong Kong singer.

In 2009, Peter supports Sharon Cheung to start a free movie website "Goyeah.com", this brings the first time in Hong Kong history of sharing movie for free online, the website mainly profit are from commercial [3]

In Feb,22, 2013, Hong Kong government announce they will appoint Peter Lam Kin Ngok as the new chairman of Hong Kong Tourism Board replacing James Tien.[4] In the same year, he was elect by members to the standing committee of the twelfth CPPCC national committee.

Personal life

Peter married a Chinese actress Tse Ling-Ling in 1980, the couple have five children- Lester, Emily, Evelyn, Eleanor, Lucas and Lyann where Lucas and Lyann are twins. However, because of Lam's dissolute, the couple have filed for divorce in 1993, after two years the couple is officially divorced.[5]

Their son, Lester Lam who graduated from Northeastern University in the United States is currently the executive director and CEO of Lai Sun Group, in one of the interview he stated that he admired his father and he also talks about how to take on the family business, in order he is consider as the successor of the future Lai Sun Group.[6]

Hobby

Peter interested in Cigar where he owns a cigar shop in Hong Kong. He also loves horse racing, he and both of his brothers are member of Hong Kong Jockey Club where he owns two horses, Go baby go and Million darling. In Million daring six times appearance, he has been in the top four every single time, sadly due to leg injury, he was forced to retire in 2011, his total stakes was 939,475 Hong Kong dollars.[7]

2008 Speeding offense

In early 2008, Lam deflected a speeding offence when he successfully challenged the correct use and validity of laser speed detectors by the police. Lam was allegedly clocked at 114 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. He eventually pled guilty to driving at 79 km/h, and was fined HK$450.[8]
