Peter Field

Peter Field (born July 8, 1946) is a British psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and counselor. He is the author of The Chi of Change, which examines the therapeutic value, practice and application of hypnotherapy. Chi of Change reached the top of Amazon's bestseller list in several categories soon after its release. Field is a regular BBC contributor and is frequently interviewed by news agencies on the subject of hypnosis and therapy. He is a regular contributing writer for the Huffington Post and PsychCentral. He is a designated Senior Practitioner with the UK Hypnotherapy Standards Council, a Board Certified Hypnotherapist with the National Guild of Hypnotists, USA (NGH) and a Board Certified Instructor with the NGH. Field has hypno-psychotherapy practices in London’s Harley Street and in Broad Street, Birmingham. He lives in the West Midlands, United Kingdom.

Early life

Born in Birmingham, England, Field became interested in psychology at an early age. In his early twenties, he became addicted to drugs and alcohol, a condition that led to homelessness.[1] He credits the lessons he learned through these experiences as the foundation of the therapeutic approach he later developed.[2] While recovering from addiction, Field traveled extensively, living on all five continents at one time or another and spending the majority of his life outside his native United Kingdom. In India, he learned hypnosis, which he initially used for personal pain management. As a student, Field studied with and was influenced by the late US hypnotherapist Gil Boyne, an early pioneer in the psychotherapeutic use of hypnosis, and also with various other expert therapists, worldwide.[3]

Career

Field's career as a hypnotherapist has focused on practical applications of hypnosis to alleviate personality and addictive disorders. He is frequently interviewed in the media where his message is that positive behavioral and psychological change can be achieved through hypno-psychotherapy. As a guest on the "Molly Green Show,"[4] Field treated BBC newscaster Louisa Lewis, clearing her of an incapacitating and life-long fear of stickers, a condition for which he coined the neologism ‘pittakionophobia’. In the program he expressed the view that everyone has irrational fears and they are generated by the subconscious mind. Therefore, "it's to the subconscious mind that we must turn for the solution," Field said. British journal, The Times interviewed Field about the use of hypnotherapy to stop unconscious teeth grinding. Field said that such grinding is caused by childhood anxiety or unexpressed anger which may be triggered later in life by stress. Summing up his therapeutic approach he said, "I help patients go to the origin of the problem and reprocess the subconscious." [5] On the BBC program, Danny Kelly In the Afternoons, Field was challenged to help a smoker who wished to quit smoking and had already tried several methods for quitting without success. The treatment was successful.[6]

Field’s study of and interest in the areas of psychology, philosophy and nutrition are reflected in his writings, and are an integral part of his therapeutic approach. Having spent years working as a therapist, Field formulated his CHI-HypnoTherapy, a distillation and integration of a variety of therapeutic approaches. According to Field, CHI-HypnoTherapy is a systematic approach that combines advanced hypno-psychotherapeutic strategies such as age regression therapy, with Gestalt therapy, Ego State Therapy, self-hypnosis and light-and-sound brain-wave modulation. It is a therapeutic approach that has been termed, “groundbreaking ” and “an important new approach to emotional and mental healing." [7]

Books and Publications

A Sense of Joy

Field's first book, A Sense of Joy, is a collection of meditations and essays which aim to help the reader put things into perspective. Clinical Psychologist Kathy Seigler found the book "Poignant, comforting and insightful."[8]

The Chi of Change

Field's book, The Chi of Change, was published in 2014 by Psyche Books, John Hunt Publishing.[9] The book rose to the top of Amazon's bestseller list in several categories in both the USA and the UK soon after its release. The book analyzes and discusses the causes and hypno-psychotherapeutic treatment of a range of different psychological and behavioral disorders[10] utilizing case histories of a number of Field's patients taken from his more than thirty years hypnosis experience. In it, he postulates that neurosis is most often the product of unresolved fear. Reviews of the book generally agree that it is potentially helpful to people suffering from "maladaptive subconscious programming" which may manifest as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, insomnia, over-eating, panic attacks, etc.[3][10][11]

Contributing Writer

As a columnist for the Huffington Post and PsychCentral, Field has written a number of articles on hypnotherapy and its application to pain management and overcoming fear.[1][12]
