Peter, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein[1][2] (German: Friedrich Ernst Peter; 30 April 1922, Schloss Louisenlund, Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany[1][2] – 30 September 1980, Bienebek, Schleswig-Holstein, West Germany[1][2]) was the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein and Head of both the House of Glücksburg and the entire House of Oldenburg from 10 February 1965 until his death on 30 September 1980.[1][2] Peter was the third and youngest son[1][2] of Wilhelm Friedrich, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein and his wife, Princess Marie Melita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.[1][2] He was a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria through her second son, Prince Alfred.
Marriage and issue
Peter married Princess Marie Alix of Schaumburg-Lippe, daughter of Prince Stephan Alexander Viktor of Schaumburg-Lippe and his wife, Duchess Ingeborg Alix of Oldenburg,[1][2] on 9 October 1947 in Glücksburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.[1][2] Peter and Maria Alice had four children,[1][2] all of whom bore the style Highness:
- Princess Marita of Schleswig-Holstein (born 5 September 1948); married Wilfred Freiherr (Baron) von Plotho on 23 May 1975. They have two children:
- Christoph, Freiherr von Plotho (b. 1976)
- Irina, Freiin von Plotho (b. 1978)
- Christoph, Prince of Schleswig-Holstein (b. 22 August 1949)
- Prince Alexander of Schleswig-Holstein (b. 9 July 1953)
- Princess Ingeborg of Schleswig-Holstein (b. 9 July 1956); married Nikolaus Broschek on 1 June 1991.
