Pervez Rashid (also spells Pervez Rasheed or Pervaiz Rashid; Urdu: پرويز رشيد; b. 15 January 1947), is a Pakistani politician, conservative literary figure, and a senator from Punjab who is currently tenuring as the Minister of Information, Mass-media Broadcasting, and National Heritage, appointed in 2013.[1][2]

Prior to be Senator, Rashid was a media executive and served Chairman of the Pakistan Television (PTV) from 1997 to 1999.[3]

Biography

Early life and Education

Pervaiz Rashid was born in 15 January 1947 to a middle class family.[4] His father, Abdul Rasheed, was an activist of the Pakistan Movement.[4] After matriculating from local high school in Lahore, Rashid attended the Gordon College where he received his BA in Fine Arts.[4] At Gordon College, he was regarded as one of the brilliant student as many senior politicians were his class or college fellows at the time.[4] In 1970s, he started his political struggle as a student leader against the PPP led by Prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.[4] In 1980s, he joined the Pakistan Television Corporation and worked in a corporate assignments of the PTV. Similar views and national conservative ideology brought Rashid in near circles of Nawaz Sharif in 1990.

He continued his political relations with the PML(N) and eventually becoming the chairman of the Pakistan Television Corporation in 1997.[5] In 1999, Rashid's tenure was eventually terminated by Pervez Musharraf after the latter staged a coup against Nawaz Sharif.[5]

Political career

He was elected to the Senate of Pakistan in 2009 on PML-N party ticket. He was a member of Senate Standing Committees on Information and Broadcasting, at Nawaz Shareef's third government [6]

Minister of information

He was sworn in as Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting on 3 June 2013.[7][8][9]
