People Keep Talking is the debut studio album by American hip hop artist Hoodie Allen. It was announced on August 19 with a pre-order date of August 25 and a release date of October 14, 2014.[2][3] The album features 14 tracks.[4]
Background
Allen has been talking about this album on his social media networks for over two years. On his birthday, he announced via Twitter and Facebook that he will be releasing "People Keep Talking" on October 14, 2014.[5][6] The reason behind the album name "People Keep Talking", explained by Hoodie in a YouTube video, is the fact people are talking about Hoodie and his work, but he is not listening and doing his own thing.[7] Allen wrote that the album is largely about relationships and believing in yourself rather than record labels and haters. Ten out of the fourteen tracks are "pretty carefree" but there's also substance and a message here because he wants to be a "role model and not cotton candy fluff."[8]
Release and promotion
People Keep Talking was available to stream through iTunes First Play on October 7, 2014.[9] The album was officially released on October 14, 2014 on iTunes becoming Allen's second album to do so where it reached the No. 2 spot on the albums chart.[10] The album was also released through physical CDs which was his first work to be released that way. Allen is described as a "marketing whiz" who has "expertly promoted" the album by releasing high quality music videos or audio for majority of the songs.[11] Allen performed "All About It" on Good Day Philadelphia.[12]
Reception
A reviewer from Muhlenberg Weekly wrote that People Keep Talking is Hoodie's best work to date and he showed off his fast flow and clever lines.[13] People Keep Talking was predicted to sell around 35,000 to 45,000 copies in its first week.[14]
Commercial Performance
The album debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200, with sales of 30,246 copies in the United States.[15] The fifth single off the album, "All About It" featuring Ed Sheeran, peaked at #71 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts[16]
