Route description

PA 456 begins at the Maryland border in Warren Township, heading north on Little Cove Road, a two-lane undivided road. The starting road continues into Maryland as Hollow Road.[4][5]

From the state line, the route goes over Licking Creek using a bridge. This bridge is made out of steel and is either a stringer/multi-beam bridge or a girder bridge.[6] It is 10.7 feet (3.3 m) long and is maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). After crossing the bridge, PA 456 turns northeast into a mix of farmland and forests in a narrow valley. PA 456 continues northeast, passing through many farms and some small communities. About 7.5 miles (12,070 m) from its south end, PA 456 crosses a second bridge that goes over Little Cove Creek. This bridge is made out of prestressed concrete and is either a Box beam or a Girder bridge. It is 125 feet (38.1 m) long and is also maintained by PennDOT.[6] About 9.5 miles from its south end, PA 456 goes right by Saunderosa Park. PA 456 crosses into Peters Township and reaches its northern terminus at an intersection with PA 16.[4][5]

PA 456's northern terminus at PA 16 is two miles from Buchanan's Birthplace State Park, which marks the birthplace of the 15th president of the United States of America, James Buchanan.

All of PA 456 has an annual average daily traffic of about 526 vehicles per day.[7][8]

PA 456 crosses over two bridges throughout its route: one over Little Cove Creek and another over Licking Creek.[9][6] The bridge going over Little Cove Creek is made out of steel and is either a stringer/multi-beam bridge or a girder bridge.[9] It is 10.7 feet (10.7 m) long and is maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The bridge going over Licking Creek is made out of prestressed concrete and is either a Box beam or a Girder bridge. It is 125 feet (38.1 m) long and is also maintained by PennDOT.[6]

History

When Pennsylvania first legislated its routes in 1911, what is now PA 456 was not legislated as part of a route.[10] By 1930, what is now PA 456 existed as a paved connecting road.[2] PA 456 was designated by 1940 to follow its current alignment between the Maryland border and PA 16.[3][9]

The bridge going over Little Cove Creek was built in 1937 and reconstructed in 2007.[9] The one going over Licking Creek was built in 1967.[6]
