History

Penelope's first public performance was in December 1996 at the Swanbourne Hotel.[1] As a result they entered the 1997 Australian National Campus Band Competition and made it to the state final.[1] "That was when we first really started to take things seriously" drummer Tim Beor explained.[1]

The band also made the semi-final of the 1998 Next Big Thing competition, and they won the 1998 WA Song Contest in the 'Love Category', with their track, "Spanish Fly".[2] Another song, "Betty", was included on the 1999 various artists compilation album, Eat More Perth Homegrown (other bands included Eskimo Joe, Adam Said Galore, Turnstyle and Red Jezebel).[1][3][4]

Penelope played with and supported other acts, including Beaverloop, Eskimo Joe, Turnstyle, Adam Said Galore and Red Jezebel at most of Perth's original music venues. The band's music received radio airplay on RTRFM, Triple J, 100 FM and PBS 106.7FM.[1][5]

In September 1999 they released their first EP, Eleven, its six tracks include "Spanish Fly" and Betty".[6][7] In 2001 they issued their debut album, Fear and Fasicination, on the Phantom Music label.[8]
