Penagalur or Penagaluru is a village and a mandal in Kadapa district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India.[1]

Geography

Penagaluru is located at 14°17′00″N 79°16′00″E / 14.2833°N 79.2667°E.[2] It has an average elevation of 103 meters 341 feet).

History

Penagalur was once called as Pedakallur by the Cholas who ruled South India. Here a temple for Lord Krishna was constructed by Vijayanagara kings in 1490 A.D. One ancient temple of Lord Siva also appears in the village. The village has a big tank constructed 200 years ago, which is located on the west side of the village.

Penagalur was formally known as Peddakallur by the Eastern Cholas, rulers of South Andhra around 1000 CE. Once upon a time this area was full of Big Stones. So, the village Was named after with Peddakallur ( Pedda means big and Kallu means stones. This village appears with four streets vertically and horizontally that tells us this village was constructed well palnning. Presently this village consists of more than 600 families and with 2000 population.All the people in the village are Hindus that belong to 16 Castes and Sub-Castes. Agriculture and Foreign jobs are the important sources of income of the people. In the south side of the village there is an upland area which is full of dry lands and thorn plants. In the east and north directions of the village, there located agriculture fields about 500 Hectares of Agriculture land. Paddy is the main crop, Oil seeds, Mango, Maize, Sugar cane are the other crops abundantly grown in the fields. There is tank called Kanyakala Cheruvu, located west side of the main village. A river, called Cheyyeru, flows 2 km. from the main village and it supplies water for a big tank, constructed 300 years ago which is located West side of the village. At the entrance of the tank (Kanyakala Cheruvu) there is a beautiful temple for Lord Krishna was constructed by Vijayanagara kings in 1490 A.D.This temple was constructed approximately before 2000 yrs. Every year a Ten-Day Devotional Ceremony (Tirunalla) is conducted for the Lord Krishna in the Month Jestha Masam (May and June). One ancient temple of Lord Siva also appears in the North direction of the village. The people of the village are good devoties as they offer lakhs of rupees every year for construction of new temples in the village. By the efforts of the people, there constructed somenice temples for Sai Baba, Lord Siva and local ditee Yallamma. In history, some freedom fighters and Poets born in this village. Pidatala Pedda Venkata Subbaiah (1890-1958) was a freedom fighter, a rich land lord and Pidatala Chinna Venkata Subbaiah (1900-1975) was a poet had written some great books and done many charities.Also neyar one village NARASINGARAJAPURAM IN NIDIGANTI subbaiah(abbaiah)(1885-1946) and Kundavaram Subbaiah ware freedom fighters, a rich land lords and vedhapandiets.
