PDFtk or the PDF Toolkit is a cross-platform tool for manipulating Portable Document Format (PDF) documents.
PDFtk comes in two versions: PDFtk Free (open source) and PDFtk Pro (proprietary paid). A lot of functions are not available in the open source version, but only in the paid proprietary one.[3]
PDFtk is a front end to the iText library (compiled to native code using GCJ), capable of splitting, merging, encrypting, decrypting, uncompressing, recompressing, and repairing PDFs. It can also be used to manipulate watermarks, metadata, and to fill PDF Forms with FDF Data (Forms Data Format) or XFDF Data (XML Form Data Format).
Some features from the unix man page:
- Merge PDF documents or collate PDF page scans.
- Split PDF pages into a new document.
- Rotate PDF documents or pages.
- Decrypt input as necessary (password required).
- Encrypt output as desired.
- Fill PDF forms with X/FDF data and/or flatten forms.
- Generate FDF data stencils from PDF forms.
- Apply a background watermark or a foreground stamp.
- Report PDF metrics, bookmarks and metadata.
- Add/update PDF bookmarks or metadata.
- Attach files to PDF pages or the PDF document.
- Unpack PDF attachments.
- Burst a PDF document into single pages.
- Uncompress and re-compress page streams.
- Repair corrupted PDF (where possible).
