The Patriotic Party (Turkish: Vatan Partisi, abbreviation VP) is left-wing political party in Turkey formed on February 15, 2015. The party was formed during the congress of the Workers' Party (İP), where the party members voted in favour of rebranding the party.[2] Similar to the İP, the VP is led by Doğu Perinçek. The party has been described by Perinçek as a party for 'nationalists, socialists and Kemalists'.[3] The party's founding members include former army generals who had been incriminated during the Ergenekon trials and the Sledgehammer case as well as İzmir MP Birgül Ayman Güler who had resigned from the centre-left Republican People's Party in January.[4]

Etymology

The party's Turkish name Vatan directly translates to Motherland or Homeland, however the party has adopted the English name Patriotic Party. This is most likely in order not to clash with parties that have a similar name when translated to English, such as the Motherland Party (Anavatan Partisi) or the Homeland Party (Yurt Partisi). Patriotic in Turkish translates to Vatansever or Yurtsever.

The party's official short name (abbreviation) is Vatan Partisi, i.e. the same as the name of the party itself.[5][6] Colloquially the acronym VP is used.
