Patricia A. (Trish) Kaufmann of Lincoln, Delaware, is an expert on the postage stamps and postal history of the Confederate States of America (CSA), and has written numerous articles on the subject. In addition to dealing in the sale of stamps, Ms. Kaufmann and her husband operated a wreck diving charter boat off the mid-Atlantic coast for 15 years.

Collecting interests

Trish has been collecting and studying Confederate philately since she was in her teens. A number of her exhibits have won Grand Awards and Reserve Grand Awards in national competition. Because of her expert knowledge of CSA philately, she has qualified as a philatelic expert witness in legal court cases.

Philatelic literature

Trish is a prolific writer of articles on CSA philately, and has edited numerous journals related to the CSA, including The Confederate Philatelist, where she served as editor and co-editor for over seventeen years. She was the editor-in-chief of the 2012 Confederate States of America Catalog and Handbook of Stamps and Postal History, published by the Confederate Stamp Alliance. Trish also served as section editor of The Confederate Stampless Cover Catalog, was a contributor to the 1986 New Dietz Confederate States Catalogue and contributes to the annual updates of the Scott Specialized Catalogue. Ms. Kaufmann writes a monthly column for the American Stamp Dealer and Collector entitled "The Confederate Post". She has written many articles in The American Philatelist on the subject of Confederates and U.S. antique valentines and postal history, as well as numerous other publications. She has served on the CSA Authentication Service since 1996 and was Recording Secretary of that group for 11 years.

Philatelic activity

Trish is very active in philatelic circles. She is a life member of American Philatelic Society, Confederate Stamp Alliance, U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, the American Philatelic Research Library, and a member of the American Stamp Dealers Association, as well as being a member of various philatelic clubs, such as the Collectors Club of New York and Royal Philatelic Society of London. In addition to being a specialized retailer of Confederate stamps and postal history and former auctioneer, Trish is a past president of the Confederate Stamp Alliance, the first woman to hold that office. Trish is also the first woman, and the youngest person, to be bestowed with the title “General” by the Confederate Stamp Alliance.

Trish works regularly with the Scott Catalogue editors to maintain the Confederate sections of Volume I and the Scott Specialized Catalogue, and she is also a researcher for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Postal Museum and serves on the Council of Philatelists. Because of her research on the 3-cent 1861 Postmaster Provisionals, published in the American Philatelist and The Confederate Philatelist, the 2000 Scott Specialized Catalogue was required to create an entirely new section, which precedes the Confederate States section.

Honors and awards

Ms. Kaufmann has received numerous awards and recognition, including CSA Trophy (highest exhibiting award), August Dietz Award (twice) for research and writing, the Haydn Myer Award a record three times for service to the Confederate Stamp Alliance, President's Trophy, Trustees Trophy, Robert A.
