The Parry Sound Shamrocks were a Canadian Junior ice hockey team from Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. This defunct hockey team was a part of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League.
History
The Shamrocks were originally formed in 1994 as a member of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, but in 1999 the team made the move to the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League.
Parry Sound made the NOJHA finals against the Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats in their final two seasons in the NOJHA in 1998 and 1999. The Shamrocks lost both final series.
The move to the OPJHL helped the team cut travel costs and play in a competitive calibre hockey league. However, the on ice results left the team facing a high turnover rate in players wanting to be traded or released while the team was accumilating outstandings debts. The financial records for the team were stolen out of car in fall 2001.
The team opted to take a leave of absence after the 2001-02 season after experiencing financial problems. The Shamrocks were also interested in playing at the junior "C" level the following season. During the summer, remaining players went elsewhere to resume their junior "A" hockey careers. The Parry Sound Shamrocks were not returning to the OPJHL or resurfacing elsewhere and officially folded leaving a trail of heavy debts.
Some of the most influential players through 1997 through 1999 were locals Ben Moore (U of Western) and Matt Monks (Wilfrid Laurier University). However both individual chose to put off state side scholarships with ambitions in the CIS.
