Parkside railway station (Newton-le-Willows)
Parkside railway station was a station on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It opened with the line on 15 September 1830. It was originally designed as a halt for early locomotives to take on water about halfway along the new line. During the opening ceremony the MP William Huskisson was killed in an accident at the station. In 1839 the station was relocated slightly east to accommodate the new line to Preston. The old station remained open for a period as a goods halt. The new station closed on 1 May 1878, as the newer locomotives did not need to take on water so frequently. Both stations are long-demolished, but a memorial to Huskisson remains at the original site.[1][2] The site of the station was near Newton-le-Willows.[3]
