Paradise Valley Hospital (PVH) is an 301 bed acute care facility in National City, California. It began operation in 1904 as a sanitarium and is currently under the ownership and operation of Prime Healthcare Services, Inc. (PHS), a hospital management company located in Victorville, CA. Paradise Valley Hospital is the largest employer in National City, with an ethnically diverse workforce of approximately 1,500 employees.[1]

History

Paradise Valley Hospital was founded in 1904 by Ellen G. White, who helped to purchase 54 acres (220,000 m2) of land with the purpose of beginning a healthcare institution named Paradise Valley Sanitarium. This occurred during the health reform of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, who later turned the sanitarium into a full-fledged hospital. Over the years, PVH came to be known for providing charity care to the surrounding community[2] which led to a growing deficit.[3] As a result, it was sold to Prime Healthcare Services in 2006, making it part of a family of 17 other community hospitals owned by PHS.[4][5]

Community Programs

In addition to its basic 24-hour emergency service, Paradise Valley Hospital offers free to low-cost classes and programs to the community through its Center for Health Promotion.[6] These cover areas such as diabetes management with glucose screening, asthma and other respiratory issues, nutrition, quitting smoking, stress and weight management, first time parent classes, and fitness.[7]
