Company
Panzura was founded in 2008 by Randy Chou and John Taylor, both members of the founding software team at Aruba Networks. Although incorporated in Delaware, the company was first headquartered in San Jose, California when funded in November 2010 with an additional $12 million.[1][2] The company was initially funded by Matrix Partners, Khosla Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures (an arm of Chevron Corporation).[3] A round of $15 million was led by Opus Capital in June 2012, and included previous investors.[4] A round of $25 million in funding included Meritech Capital Partners in June 2013.[5][6] In July 2013, Flash memory maker SanDisk was announced as an investor, despite also investing in Whiptail.[2][7]
Based Campbell, California in 2013, Panzura provides cloud storage and data protection through specialized cloud storage controllers. Panzura products are accessed using network-attached storage (NAS) protocols. They allow users secure access to the latest versions of any file from any widely distributed locations.[8] Industry analysts sometimes call this kind of product a cloud storage gateway.[9][10] It is available both as a hardware appliance called Quicksilver, or software-only for use on VMware ESX.[8] Quicksilver won a "best in show" award at the May 2012 Interop trade show.[9]
The Panzura Global Cloud Storage System integrates with cloud storage platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Cleversafe, EMC Atmos,[11] Google,[12] HP Cloud Services,[13] and Nirvanix.
Panzura received three patents on its technology in 2013.[14] Panzura offers proprietary software delivered on hardware appliances or virtual machine licenses, which are installed locally to backup actively archive and centralize data at a remote location. Architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro credited Panzura technology for speeding backup and recovery of its data after Hurricane Sandy.[15] California State University, Northridge also used the technology for backing up its data.[16] In March 2013 Panzura announced it achieved FIPS 140-2 security certification from the National Institute for Standards and Technology for use by US government agencies and contractors.[17]
