Palm Beach Plaza is a shopping complex in Papamoa, Tauranga, New Zealand opened in 1997.[1] It has an immediate catchment of 17,000 people; this rises to over 200,000 people in the summer holidays.[3] There are 37 stores in the Plaza, of which 30 are currently occupied (as of October 2012).

History

Palm Beach Plaza opened in 1997. On November 5, 2002, part the mall was devastated by a large fire that started in Shane Punjab Restaurant. 3 stores were gutted, and 3 others were damaged. The fire caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.[4] At 5am on March 12, 2006, a fire broke out in the 'Fresh Fish Market' store. The mall had installed Automatic Alarms since the 2002 fire, which allowed the fire to be dealt with quicker.[5] On June 16, 2006, the Papamoa Library and Community Centre opened adjacent to the Plaza. The 975sqm building cost $9.1 million to build.[6] During the summer of 2006-2007 Weber Bros La Jester Circus visited Palm Beach Plaza. The circus was located where the McDoanlds restaurant currently stands. Towards the end of 2008, a McDonalds Restaurant opened in the Plaza. It occupies its own building and is adjacent to the Papamoa Library.[7]

Location

Palm Beach Plaza is located on the corner of Gravatt Road and Domain Road in Papamoa. There is road access to the shopping centre from both of these roads. On Gravatt Road, the shopping centre is adjacent to the Papamoa Library and is opposite another shopping centre (Fashion Island). On Domain Road, the shopping centre is adjacent to a Z Petrol Station.

A market is held at the Plaza on the second and fourth Sunday of every month.[8] The market is run by the Papamoa Lions Club[9]

Anchor Tenants

Palm Beach Plaza contains two anchor stores; Countdown and The Warehouse.[10] Originally, Woolworths occupied the site that Countdown currently operates. The supermarket was rebranded as Countdown as part of Progressive Enterprises' $1 billion investment into its New Zealand stores.

Public Transport

Bus route 30 (Mount Maunganui - Papamoa ) serves a bus stop within the shopping centre's car park. Bus routes 33 and 36 (both Tauranga - Papamoa ) serve bus stops outside the shopping centre on Gravatt Road.[11]
