Pakwach is a town in Northern Uganda.
Location
Pakwach is located in Nebbi District, in West Nile sub-region, in Northern Uganda. It is situated approximately 112 kilometres (70 mi), by road, southeast of Arua, the largest town in West Nile.[2] This location lies along the western bank of the Albert Nile, approximately 121 kilometres (75 mi), by road, southwest of Gulu, the largest city in Northern Uganda.[3] The coordinates of Pakwach are:2°27'43.0"N, 31°29'54.0"E (Latitude:2.461944; Longitude:31.498333).[4]
Railways
The town is the country’s railhead on the White Nile, not far north of the outlet from Lake Albert. The next port on the White Nile is Juba, South Sudan. In June 2006, Chinese assistance was promised to build a railway extension from Pakwach to Juba. Juba is still about 600 kilometres (370 mi) south of the Sudan Railways southernmost station at Wåw. Should the Ugandan and South Sudanese railways ever meet, there will be a break of gauge problem as Uganda uses meter gauge and South Sudan uses cape gauge which can be reduced by building the new tracks with gauge convertible sleepers.
Population
The 2002 national census estimated the population of the town at 17,625. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), estimated the population of Pakwach at 21,700 in 2010. In 2011, UBOS estimated the mid-year population of Pakwach at 22,300.[5] In 2014, the national population census put the population of Pakwach at 22,360.[1]
2013 total solar eclipse
On the 3rd of November 2013 Pakwach was the centre of Uganda's hybrid eclipse celebrations. Thousands of locals were joined by solar eclipse tourists and professional observers. The official celebration, which took place at a primary school 10 kilometers from the town of Pakwach, was attended by three kings (Rwothi) as well as Uganda's President Museveni Cabinet Ministers.[6]

- The Gulu-Arua Road passes through the town
- The Pakwach Campus of Muni University - Housing the Faculty of Fisheries and Aquaculture[8]
