The Pacific Sun was founded in 1963 in California, and is the second longest running alternative weekly in the nation, behind only The Village Voice. With a readership of around 80,000, the paper is distributed throughout Marin County, just north of San Francisco in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Until 2012, the paper was owned by Embarcadero Media, who purchased it from longtime owner Steve McNamara in 2004. Sam Chapman, former Chief of Staff for U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (who worked as a reporter for the Pacific Sun early in her career), was the paper's publisher until 2010. In October 2012, Bob Heinen of Luxembourg West purchased the paper and replaced Gina Allen as publisher.[2] Jason Walsh serves as the editor and Dani Burlison replaced Samantha Campos as staff writer in 2010.
The paper is published every Friday.
