Pablo Rodriguez Rodriguez, (born 17 April 1972) is a computer scientist. He is the Research and Innovation Director for Telefónica. He holds a Ph.D. in Communications Systems from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and has been an adjunct Professor at Columbia University, New York.

Education

Pablo graduated with a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Pública de Navarra, Spain in 1995, while doing his M.S. thesis in Physics and Optical Sensors with Prof. Alan Rogers at King's College London, entitled "Advances in high-resolution distributed sensing using a time-resolved photon counting technique".[1]

He attended the Doctoral School in Communication Systems in 1997 and gained a PhD in Computer Science in 2000, both from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. For his PhD he worked at Institut Eurécom with Prof. Ernst Biersack. During his PhD he also worked at AT&T Labs (Shannon Laboratory, Florham Park, NJ) developing TCP/IP improvements for multi‐hop HTTP proxies.

His dissertation, "Scalable Content Distribution in the Internet", focused on scaling the existing Internet architecture to perform content distribution to millions of users. As part of his PhD work, he designed Parallel-Download algorithms to improve download times and resilience in Peer-to-Peer file swarming systems.[2]

Career

Pablo worked as a software architect in two Silicon Valley start-ups: Inktomi (acquired by Yahoo!) where he worked as a software architect in the Inktomi Wireless Data Accelerator—one of the world´s first cellular Wireless Proxies[3][4]—and Tahoe Networks where he designed wireless edge routers for mobile IP services (now part of Nokia [5]).

He also worked at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts and as a Member of Technical Staff at Bell-Labs in New Jersey. At Microsoft Research, he co-designed the Avalanche (P2P) system,[6] which uses Linear network coding [7] to improve security patches download times and resilience.[8][9] Microsoft made the technology available as a system called 'Microsoft Secure Content Downloader' (MSCD).[10]

As a researcher at Microsoft Research he worked on parallel-downloads to transmit data simultaneously over multiple wireless connections such as GPRS, 3G, Wireless LAN, and Bluetooth, which influenced the design of Multipath TCP.[11] In 2007 he was part of the committee that defined the Future Internet network design efforts at the USA National Science Foundation.[12][13][14]

Since 2006 he is the Research Director at Telefonica R&D,[15][16] and was the Director of Research and Innovation at Telefonica Digital[17][18][19] until 2014, when Telefonica Digital was closed.[20] At Telefonica he worked on Telefonica's Global Video Content Delivery Network[21] and the BeWiFi network.[22][23]

In 2010 he joined the Computer Science Department of Columbia University as an Adjunct Professor where he taught Social Networks and Next Generations System Architectures [24]

His research includes computer networking and distributed systems, content distribution and peer-to-peer, wireless networks, low power datacasting,[25] multicast and web caching. His current interests include network economics, data transparency,[26] privacy and personal data.[27][27][28]

He collaborates with chef Ferran Adria at elBulli to develop Bullipedia, a culinary Wikipedia,[29][30] and with FC Barcelona[31] to define new strategies for soccer playing using Big Data and Network theory.[32][33][34][35]

Honors and awards

He received the 2007 and 2013 best paper award at the ACM/Internet Measurement Conference,[36] and the “Prix de la Recherche” for outstanding Ph.D. Thesis.[37] He has more than 200 scientific publications and patents.[28]

He was the keynote speaker at the World Wide Web Conference in 2009, at the 40 years Commemoration ceremony of International Federation for Information Processing TC6, the IEEE/Infocom 2013 Re-architecting the Internet,[38] the IEEE/P2P conference,[39] Network Science 2013, Tenera 2013,[40] IMC 2013,[41] LADIS 2010,[42] and at the Distinguished speaker series at University of California, Irvine Computer Science Department.

Pablo was the General Chair for ACM/SIGCOMM '09. He has been a member of the editorial board for IEEE/Association for Computing Machinery Transactions on Networking (ToN), editor of ACM Computer Communications Review SIGCOMM/CCR, a special editor for IEEE/JSAC, a steering committee member for IEEE/HotWeb, and a Marie Curie Fellow.[43]

In 2007 he received the gold award from the city of Langreo as a recognition of his research career.[44]

He is a member of the Scientific Council of IMDEA Networks since 2010,[45] a board member of LaBoral Art Center since 2013.,[46] and a trustee board member of the Calatan Foundation for Research and Innovation since 2014.[47]
