Symbols used in the film

Paadha Mudra is affluent with a good amount of symbols. Some of them are need to be mentioned. The 'pappadom' that the character Mathu Pandaram sells symbolizes the semen. Since this character is loyal to the deity that he represents, (who gives the fortune of children for those who do not have them) his characterization as a person who sells 'pappadams' alongside becoming himself the human form of the deity is very significant and also justifiable. The spoon that is thrown by the child character Kuttappan to his biological father Mathu Pandaram can be seen as a symbol of penis. Somewhere in the film we are shown the character of Kuttappan treading on an old rag that contains the menstrual blood of his mother. This can be seen as a symbolic way of telling Kuttappan's resentment toward a life of misfortune he has to lead and of a life over which he has only lesser controls.
