Out With Dad is a Canadian award-winning[1][2][3] drama web series created, written, directed, and produced by Jason Leaver. The series is about teenage lesbian Rose and her coming out with her single father Nathan; themes like challenges of youth in coming out and struggles of parents when a child comes out are dealt openly, and this led PFLAG Canada to officially endorse Out With Dad.[4]
Series overview
Out With Dad is a Canadian web series, filmed in Toronto. The series was created, written and directed by Jason Leaver. Primarily focused on Rose and Nathan, a father and daughter dealing with her being out in a catholic school. Leaver sought to fill a hole in the web series market and believed the premise of the series would be broadly welcomed.[5]
Out With Dad is seen as a coming of age story within the LGBT community. The series has focused on key themes facing gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teenagers. These themes include acceptance, homophobia and societal pressure. These are explored not only through the core characters, Rose and Nathan but by Rose's first love Vanessa and her first girlfriend Claire. Through Nathan theme of acceptance and homophobia in work are also developed.
Gaining strong support from a wide range or organisations, the series was given official endorsement by PFLAG Canada.[4] This web series also shines a spotlight on the challenges of people facing homophobia.[6]
Reaching a world-wide audience the series attracts viewership from countries which include Brazil, Germany, Italy, and the United States. As of the end of January 2014, Out With Dad has reached more than eighteen million views.[5]
Out with dad is a crowd source funded production.
Multi-lingual
Some fans take upon it themselves to write subtitles in many different languages,[7] namely:[8]
- Germanic languages : English, Dutch, German
- Latine languages : French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian
- Eastern European languages : Czech
- Partially subtitled in those languages : Russian (Seasons 1 & 2), Greek (Seasons 1 & 3) and Croatian (Seasons 1 & 3)
A deal with France Televisions led to the dubbing in French of the webseries, by its subsidiary MFP, for the broadcasting on France 4 channel of the episodes 1.01 to 3.06.[9]
Crowd funded series
Out with dad is primarily funded by the financial support of its viewers, advertisement fees and French financial support. Currently the series is on hold until finance is in place to complete series three.[10]
