Mission
To advance the global orthopaedic research agenda through excellence in research, education, collaboration, communication and advocacy
Goal
To be the world’s leading forum for the dissemination of new musculoskeletal research findings

Partners

ORS was founded in 1954 by AAOS members who had a strong interest in research and recognized the importance of research to the profession, and to the future of patient care. ORS partners with the AAOS on many programs throughout the year;

AAOS Board of Specialty Societies

ORS is a member of the AAOS Board of Specialty Societies (BOS). The ORS has four members that participate regularly in the BOS, including the ORS President, BOS Research, BOS Education, and BOS Communications Committee members.

The BOS (or COMSS) was, originally created in 1984 as the Council of Orthopaedic Musculoskeletal Specialty Societies, brings together the leaders of musculoskeletal societies to address issues of mutual concern, such as advocacy, continuing medical education, research and residency and fellowship issues. The BOS serves as a resource and advisory entity to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In addition, the BOS promotes unity and collaboration between the specialty societies and the AAOS.

NIAMS Coalition

The Coalition is a group of professional and voluntary organizations concerned with the programs of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). ORS participates regularly the NIAMS Coalition.

OREF

ORS is proud to be a founding member of the OREF.

The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) is an independent, 501(c)3 organization that raises funds to support research and education on diseases and injuries of bones, joints, nerves, and muscles. OREF-funded research educations enhance clinical care, leading to improved health, increased activity, and a better quality of life for patients. The success and impact of the Society’s research and education effort is dependent upon your support. Through our partnership with the OREF, the OREF’s designated giving program has generated more than $456,000 to support this effort. Through your donations, the ORS has been able to fund many important programs that are important to the future of orthopaedics; the ORS/OREF/AAOS Grant Writing Workshop, AAOS/ORS/OREF Clinician Scientist Development Program, ORS/OREF Travel Awards in Research Translation Award, ORS Educational Grants, and more.

Research!America

ORS is a member affiliate of Research!America, and participates in their advocacy efforts.

Starting a Movement in Health Research. In 1989, Research!America’s founders came together with the realization that there was a vast deficiency in medical research funding – and that such a gap would be detrimental to Americans for years to come. Through their mutual belief in the fundamental importance of medical research, these visionaries formed the Research!America alliance.

United States Bone and Joint Initiative

ORS is a founding member of the US Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI), and maintains a seat on the USBJDI Board of Directors.

The Bone and Joint Initiative, is a global, multi-disciplinary initiative targeting the care of people with musculoskeletal conditions-bone and joint disorders. Its focus is on improving your qualify of life as well as advancing the understanding and treatment of those conditions through research, prevention and education. Bones, and joints that create function and movement, are connected by muscle and ligaments. Their state of health and how they enable you to lead an active and healthy like is what the Decade aims to improve.

International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies

ORS is a founding member of the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies (ICORS).

The ICORS meeting services as a forum, which gathers together a global community of musculoskeletal researchers; basic, translational, and clinical.

The Combined Meeting was launched in 1992 by founding member societies; Orthopaedic Research Society, Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society, European Orthopaedic Research Society, and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. The meeting has convened every three years since 1992 and rotated to the different country organizations.

In 2007, several new orthopaedic research societies were invited to participate by the Orthopaedic Research Society in the 6th Combined Meeting held in Honolulu, Hawaii; Australia/New Zealand ORS, British ORS, Korean ORS, and the Taiwanese ORS.

In 2010, the Chinese Orthopaedic Research Society was invited to participate in the 7th Combined Meeting hosted by the Japanese Orthopaedic Association in Kyoto, Japan.

On October 15, 2013, at the 8th Combined Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Societies hosted by the European Orthopaedic Research in Venice, Italy, a new alliance was formed; the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies. Nine organizations were selected and approved as the founding members; Australia/New Zealand ORS, British ORS, Canadian ORS, Chinese ORS, European ORS, Japanese Orthopaedic Association, Korean ORS, the Orthopaedic Research Society, and the Taiwanese ORS.
