Biography

Slack was born on February 19, 1903 in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada. She was one of six children of Frank Lorne Snider and Annie Carson.[4] On 4 September 1926 she wed William George Slack, to whom she stayed married until his death in 1988.[1][5] With her husband and their two children, she moved to Belleville in the early 1950s.[6] Slack was a teacher and the first female principal in Belleville,[7] before her retirement at the age of 64.[4] Even after her 100 birthday she remained very active; she was on skis for her 100th birthday, and she worked as a hospital volunteer until the age of 104.[5] She outlived one of her children, Rosemary, who died in 1991 at the age of 51 years.[5] On her 110th birthday, she said that it might be her last.[4]
