Organellar DNA
Organellar DNA is DNA contained in organelles, outside the nucleus of Eukaryotic cells .
Examples
- mitochondria contain mitochondrial DNA
- plastids (e.g., chloroplasts) contain plastid DNA
Structure
Unlike nuclear DNA, which is present as linear molecules inside the chromosomes, organellar DNA is present as circular molecules of high copy number.
Also, because organelles are uniparentally inherited in many organisms, so is their organellar DNA.
