Ordzhonikidze (Ukrainian: Орджонікідзе; Russian: Орджоникидзе) is a small city and mining town in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast of central Ukraine. Administratively, it is incorporated within Ordzhonikidze municipality as a city of oblast significance. The city has been named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze. Population: 41,374 (2013 est.)[1].
History
The city was established in 1956 when several miners settlements of the Ordzhonikidze Mine were merged into a city. Previously, in 1883 a Russian engineer-geologist Valerian Domger discovered rich deposits of manganese ore in a basin of the Solona River. Since that time in area started to appear mining towns such as Prychepylivka (today – Hirnytske). In 1886 in place of the modern city were created Pokrovski quarries. Ordzhonikidze is located on the site of the 17th century Chortomlyk Sich.
