Ordzhonikidze (Ukrainian: Орджонікідзе; Russian: Орджоникидзе) is a small city and mining town in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast of central Ukraine. Administratively, it is incorporated within Ordzhonikidze municipality as a city of oblast significance. The city has been named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze. Population: 41,374(2013 est.)[1].

History

The city was established in 1956 when several miners settlements of the Ordzhonikidze Mine were merged into a city. Previously, in 1883 a Russian engineer-geologist Valerian Domger discovered rich deposits of manganese ore in a basin of the Solona River. Since that time in area started to appear mining towns such as Prychepylivka (today Hirnytske). In 1886 in place of the modern city were created Pokrovski quarries. Ordzhonikidze is located on the site of the 17th century Chortomlyk Sich.
