The Orchid Recovery Center for Women (Orchid) is an addiction recovery center in Palm Springs, Florida. It has been featured on ABC 20/20 and Intervention.[1][2] Orchid Recovery Center is owned by Peter Harrigan.

History

The Orchid Recovery Center for Women was founded in 2004 by Julie Queler.[1][2] Queler started the center out of her experience having run a halfway house for women and because of her own difficulties with recovery and substance abuse.[1][3] On June 27, 2011 the Center was featured on the Intervention reality television series about confronting addicts, in the second episode of the show's eleventh season, centering on a young couple addicted to heroin.[4] The Center was also featured by 20/20 in an April 2012 episode that followed four mothers trying to recover from alcoholism.[5] In 2012, CEO Julie Queler began an exploratory tour of treatment centers in India with visits to Hope Trust, Safe House, Tulasi, Caim Treatment, and Muktangan.[5]

Treatment methods

James E. Lessenger and Glade F. Roper wrote that Orchid's, "model is unlike any other because it offers women an approach that is uniquely focused on the recovery needs of the female who suffers from the painful effects of drug addiction, alcoholism, and unresolved trauma." The center blends traditional medical care with other methods including acupuncture, yoga, fitness, meditation, and art.[3] Orchid also utilizes recent empirical research in order to adapt their program to current treatment options, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, family therapy, the 12 step recovery model, sublimation, and other alternative medicines.[6] A large part of the program centers on "expressive therapies", including art therapy, healing sound therapy, meditation, psychodrama, breath work, and yoga.[7]

Television appearances

On June 27, 2011 the Center was featured on the Intervention reality television series about confronting addicts, in the second episode of the show's eleventh season, centering on a young couple addicted to heroin.[4] The Center was also featured by 20/20 in an April 2012 episode that followed four mothers trying to recover from alcoholism.[5]
