Olia Burtaev (also known as Olga) (born 18 June 1995) is an Australian synchronised swimmer. Burtaev has been a member of Australia's National Team since the age of 14, and has participated in numerous international competitions. She was a member of Australia's 2011 World Aquatics Championships synchro team. She was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 London Olympics in synchronised swimming. She is also currently Australia's National Duet champion along with Bianca Hammett, who also was a member of the 2012 London Olympics Team.
Personal
Burtaev was born on 18 June 1995 in Brisbane, Queensland.[1][2][3] She spent her childhood in the Brisbane area, and took dance classes.[2] She attended Mt Gravatt East State School before going to high school at Mansfield State High School.[1] She is trilingual, speaking English, French and Russian.[2] As a child, she wanted to be a ballerina.[2] As of 2012, she lives in Gold Coast, Queensland.[1] After finishing school, Burtaev plans to study something sports-related at university, such as nutrition, dietetics or sports psychology. Burtaev is 170 centimetres (5 ft 7 in) tall and weighs 54 kilograms (119 lb).[1]
Synchronised Swimming
Burtaev is a synchronised swimmer,[1] who started in the sport when she was ten years old.[2] At the time, Burtaev was in Year 5, and a coach was coming around asking girls to try the sport and join the club. Burtaev then joined the Aqualina Synchronised Swimming Club, in which she received her primary synchronised swimming training. Burtaev is now a member of the Gold Coast Mermaids club, which most of her 2012 Olympic team-mates are members of.
Burtaev has been a National Team member for 4 years, which she joined at age 14 in 2009.
Burtaev has had a long list of achievements to date. She has been National Solo Figures Champion three times in a row and also National Duet Champion two times in a row with Jenny-Lyn Anderson.
Burtaev finished 4th in the team event at the 2010 Swiss Open in Arbon, Switzerland.[1] She finished 11th in the team event at the 2010 FINA World Cup in China.[1] She finished 18th in the technical team event at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.[1] She finished 17th in the team event at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.[1] She finished 9th in the team event at the 2011 German Open in Bonn, Germany and 6th in the team event at the 2011 French Open in Paris, France.[1] The FINA World Championships held in Shanghai, China served as the 2012 Olympic qualifying event for the team. In the technical team portion, her team finished 18th and in the Free Team event, her team finished 17th.[4]
2012 Summer Games
In 2012, she was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics in synchronized swimming along with team-mates Eloise Amberger, Jenny-Lyn Anderson, Sarah Bombell, Tamika Domrow, Bianca Hammett, Tarren Otte, Francesca Owen and Samantha Reid.[1][2][5][6] [5] [2] At 17, Burtaev was the youngest member of the Australian squad. Burtaev was also scheduled to perform a solo synchro routine, along with some of the other members of the team. [7]
2013
After the Olympics, Burtaev and Bianca Hammett became the National Duet champions. Burtaev and Hammett represented Australia at the 2013 Open Make Up Forever synchronised swimming competition, coming 10th in the Technical Duet Final with a score of 70.5250, and 13th in the Free Duet preliminary with a score of 74.7125. At the 2013 FINA World Championships, Burtaev and Hammett came 22nd in the Technical Duet with a score of 71.700, and came 30th in the Free Duet with a score of 70.180.
