Oleg Yuriyovych Vernyayev (Ukrainian: Олег Юрійович Верняєв, Russian: Олег Юрьевич Верняев; born 29 September 1993, in Donetsk) is a Ukrainian artistic gymnast. He represented Ukraine at the 2012 Summer Olympics where he finished fourth with the team and eleventh in the all-around. He is the 2014 World Champion and 2014 European Champion on the parallel bars.

Personal Life

Vernyayev was educated at the Donetsk State Institute of Health, Physical Education and Sport. He speaks Russian and is coached by Gennady Sartynsky.[1]

Career

2011

During the 2011 Summer Universiade Verniaiev competed in the Men's Vault final, finishing in 7th position with a score of 15.262.[2] He was also part of the Ukrainian team that finished 5th in the Men's Team Final.[3] At the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships he competed in the Team all-around event, teaming with Mykola Kuksenkov, Vitalii Nakonechnyi, Oleg Stepko, Igor Radivilov and Roman Zozulya, finishing in 5th position. He scored 14.461 on floor, 13.866 on pommel horse, 14.833 on vault. and 13.800 on parallel bars.[4]

2012

Verniaiev finished in 6th position in the 2012 American Cup with a score of 88.132.[5] At the 2012 European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships he participated in the team all-around final for the Ukrainian team that finished in 5th position. He also contested the Parallel Bars final, finishing in 2nd place with a score of 15.66, 0.1 points behind the winner Marcel Nguyen.[6] He was victorious in the all-around final of the Ukrainian Championships, scoring 90.300 points and winning by a margin of 2.65 points over 2nd placed Oleg Stepko.[7] He competed for the national team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Men's artistic team all-around, alongside Nikolai Kuksenkov, Vitalii Nakonechnyi, Oleg Stepko and Igor Radivilov, and the Men's artistic individual all-around. In qualification he scored 88.964 to finish in 13th place. In the team final Ukraine finished in 4th position with a score of 271.526, missing out on a medal by less than 0.2 points. Ukraine were initially awarded 3rd place for a bronze medal however, following an appeal from Japan over a Pommel Horse score, they were awarded an extra 0.7 points, allowing them to move from 4th place to 2nd knocking Ukraine out of the medals in the process. He finished in 11th place in the individual all-around final with a score of 88.931. He scored 16.233 on vault, which was the 2nd highest score on that apparatus behind the gold medallist Kōhei Uchimura. After the first rotation in the individual all-around final Verniaiev was in 12th position having posted a score of 14.866 on rings. His second piece of apparatus was Vault and, having scored 16.233 with a difficulty of 7.0, he jumped to 1st place after the second rotation with a score of 31.099. He scored 15.033 on parallel bars to bring his total score to 46.132 and leave himself in bronze medal position after three rotations. He scored 14.300 on horizontal bar. moving down to 4th with a score of 60.432 after four rotations. Having slid out of the floor area during his routine, resulting in deductions, he posted a score of 14.533 on floor, which pushed him down further to 7th place with a score of 74.965 after five rotations. A score of 13.966 on pommel horse, put him in 11th position after the sixth, and final, rotation with a score of 88.931.[8]

2013

Verniaiev won the Ukrainian National Championships, He finished took the silver medal in individual all-around at the 2013 American Cup, He then won the bronze medal in all-around at the 2013 European Championships in Moscow, Russia.

At the 2013 Summer Universiade, Verniaiev led his Ukrainian team (Igor Radivilov, Oleg Stepko, Petro Pakhnyuk and Maksym Semiankiv) to a second place finish in the team final and qualified for the all-around final. He won the all-around bronze medal ( tied with Russian gymnast David Belyavskiy ). He won another bronze medal in the Parallel Bars final.

2014

In May 2014, at the 2014 European Championships in Sofia, Vernyayev contributed scores of 15.100 (foor), pommel horse (14.400), rings (14.900), vault (14.783), 15.591 (parallel bars) and 14.600 (horizontal bar), helping Team Ukraine win the Team bronze medal with a total score of 262.087 points behind Great Britain. In event finals, Vernyayev won the gold in parallel bars (15.966) and won bronze medal in vault (14.916) points.[9] He won gold in parallel bars at the 2014 World Championships in Nanning. After the wrong anthem was played during the medal ceremony, he said "It was written in my face that I didn't like it. They came up and apologised for the anthem and promised to change it for TV broadcast. But I thought it would be incorrect, because I screwed up my face and it will be even worse if the anthem is replaced."[10]

2015

On March 7, 2015, Vernyayev surprised many including himself when he took first place in the American Cup in Arlington, TX. He won with a score of 90.597, 0.499 over silver medalist and 2013 World Championships all-around silver medalist Ryohei Kato of Japan. USA's Donnell Whittenburg took 3rd. He was in second place behind Whittenburg up until the last event, the horizontal bar, where his score of 15.066 helped make his title official. His best score, however, came from his strongest event, parallel bars, where he is the currently world champion on that event. He scored a 15.900 there.
