Oceanco is a privately owned custom yacht builder that builds full displacement yachts in 80m+ range. Since its inception in 1987, Oceanco has built 26 custom superyachts up to 110m in length. Several 100m+ yachts are currently under construction. The company has the ability to simultaneously build 5 yachts in the 80m+ category (in various stages of design, engineering and construction), delivering approximately two yachts per year. In 2008 the company acquired more land adjacent to the present yard, and in 2010 they set about demolishing the old buildings and slips, to make way for a new state-of-the-art covered dry-dock, which now allows them to construct yachts up to 140 metres. The company operates in its extended production facility (total of 8.2ha) located in Alblasserdam, approximately 20 kms from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The yard has unrestricted direct access via the inland waterway system to the North Sea. Oceanco also maintains a sales, design, marketing and communications office in Monaco.
History
Oceanco came into existence in 1987, when a group of South African private investors under the guidance of then CEO, Richard Hein, began yacht-building operations, with the hulls and superstructures built in Durban, South Africa. The yachts were then transported to various facilities in the Netherlands where the finishing work took place. In 2002, Mr. Theodore Angelopoulos took control of Oceanco and embarked on a new building strategy focusing on the niche market of 80m+ megayachts and developed the “Y Generation” of Oceanco yachts which included AMEVI (Y701), 80 m (262.47 ft) and ALFA NERO (Y702) 82 m (269.03 ft). In 2008, the 75.5;m (248 ft) ANASTASIA was launched and in May 2009, the company launched the 85.47 m (280.41 ft) VIBRANT CURIOSITY with her amidships atrium, a 23 ft (7m) pool and large interior volumes designed by Nuvolari & Lenard.
Current
Dr Mohammed Al Barwani, a private investor, who is based in the Sultanate of Oman, acquired Oceanco in March 2010. Barwani has interests in oil, gas, manufacturing, and minerals in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific through MB Holding Company LLC as well as investments in various other diversified assets. Marcel Onkenhout, who has been with the company for 20 years, is the CEO.
The company will celebrate its 28 years in 2015 and has since delivered 26 yachts. SUNRAYS, Oceanco’s 85.5 m (281 ft) megayacht, was delivered in March 2010. The late Björn Johansson designed her exterior lines and the interior design is by Terence Disdale. She was succeeded by the 86 m (282.19 ft) Nuvolari & Lenard designed SEVEN SEAS, delivered in November 2010. More recently, the Sam Sorgiovanni designed 88.5m (290.35ft) NIRVANA was delivered in spring 2012, followed by Y708 85.6m (281ft) in 2013, EQUANIMITY 91.5m (300.2ft) in 2014 and INFINITY 88.5m (290ft) in 2015.
Several other Oceanco yachts are currently under construction including a 106 m (347.8 ft) and a 110 m (361 ft).
