Obuasi is a town in southern part of the Ashanti Region, Ghana. Obuasi is the capital of the Obuasi Municipal which lies south of the regional capital city, Kumasi. Obuasi has a settlement population of 175,043 people. The mining community,[1] gives Obuasi its delicate mosaic of cultures from all over the county, the continent, and the rest of the world and hence its cosmopolitan culture. Wearing a ring of hills as its adornment, it sits quietly albeit industriously on the soil that births the single richest bullion gold bar on Earth.
Ghana was christened the Gold Coast because of the bullion gold found in Obuasi.
Economy
Obuasi is known for its Obuasi Gold Mine, now one of the ten largest on Earth, bullion gold having been mined on the site since at least the seventeenth century.[2]
Transportation
Train
Obuasi train station is on the Ashanti railway line from Kumasi to Sekondi-Takoradi. Obuasi also has an airstrip.[2]
Tourist attractions
Tourists can visit the town's mine by arranging with the Public Relations Directorate of AGC. Operated by the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (AGC), formerly the State-Owned Ghanaian company Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (AGC), it was the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (AGC) company's largest mine until the AGC company merged in 2004 to create the Earth's second-largest gold producer, Anglo Gold Ashanti (AGA) with the merging of the South African company AngloGold.[2]

Healthcare
Obuasi is also noted for the great health care facilities such as AGA Hospital owned by Anglo Gold, and also a private health facility, St. Jude Hospital, owned by Dr. George Owusu-Asiedu.[2] The facility is noted for many successful surgeries and numerous successful births at the maternity division of the hospital run by the former president of the Ghana Midwives Association, Mrs. Priscilla Owusu-Asiedu.[2]
Sports and stadium
Ashanti Gold Sporting Club, a football club, is based at Obuasi's Len Clay Stadium.
Notable people
Notable people from the town of Obuasi include the footballer John Mensah and Sam E. Jonah (KBE), the former CEO of Ashanti Goldfields Company.
Sister cities
As of September 13, 2008, Obuasi was signed in as another Sister City of Riverside, California, USA.
