Oak Grove High School is a high school located outside of Hattiesburg, Mississippi (United States) in Lamar County. The principal is Helen Price.[1] It is part of the Lamar County School District and serves students from grades 9-12. In 2008, the school's drama department represented Mississippi at SETC (South Eastern Theatre Conference) for the fifth time. The department won awards in the categories of "Best Technical", "Best Ensemble", and "Most Congenial." Oak Grove High School was only the third school in Mississippi to win the competition since SETC's conception in 1949. Oak Grove is a three-time National Blue Ribbon School, having been designated as such in 1986–1987, 1992–1993, and 2004. [2][3]
Oak Grove High School's football team has gained prominence after former National Football League quarterback Brett Favre became an offensive coordinator for the team in 2012.[4] Oak Grove would then defeat the Sumrall Bobcats 64-6 in Favre's first game as a coach.[5]
Oak Grove's football and baseball facilities were destroyed by a violent, half-mile-wide, EF-4 tornado on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at approximately 5:15pm local time. The school building itself sustained little damage from the tornado.
On December 6, 2013, the Oak Grove Warriors played their first 6A State Championship game since 2009 against the Tupelo Golden Wave. In the 3rd Quarter of the game, special teams coach, Bobby DeLeon's fake field goal trick play allowed the Warriors to score the winning touchdown of the game and to win their first state championship in school history. This win would also be head coach Nevil Barr's first state championship along with offensive coordinator Brett Favre, who considered the win along the lines of winning a Super Bowl.
Alma mater
Down In Southern Mississippi,
There's a school called Oak Grove High!
Where shady oaks stand as the years go by.
And brave Warriors' banner flies,
Waving our colors; black and gold!
Hail! Oak Grove, our alma mater!
We stand proud and bold!
