Notholepiota is a genus of secotioid fungi. The genus was circumscribed by Egon Horak in 1971 to accommodate the species originally described in 1942 as Secotium areolatum by New Zealand-based mycologist Gordon Herriot Cunningham.[1] Although it has been traditionally classified in the family Agaricaceae, molecular evidence shows that the genus belongs to the Boletales, in the suborder Boletineae, family Boletaceae.[2] A second species of Notholepiota, N. sardoa, was described from Italy in 2001.[3] A later publication suggested that it be placed in Lepiota,[4] but molecular confirmation is lacking.[5]
