Nosaby level crossing disaster

The Nosaby level crossing disaster (Swedish: Järnvägsolyckan i Nosaby or Tågolyckan i Nosaby) occurred on September 10, 2004 at 9.07am in Nosaby in Kristianstad Municipality, Sweden.

Accident

At 7.33am train 357 towards Malmö left Karlskrona. According to witnesses, a truck was going to pass the level crossing near Nosaby Church exactly when the barriers went down after 9.00am. The train crashed into the truck trailer and after that the pellets which were loaded in the trailer flew out. The truck was thrown forward and crashed into another truck which waited until the barriers should go up.

The 1st railcar derailed totally and rotated 180º. The 2nd and 3rd car did also derail and the rail and the embankment were destroyed.

2 drivers who were at the front of the train died and 47 passengers were injured.

Legal process[1][2][3]

The truck driver claimed that he was "bländad av solen" ("dazzled by the sun") and then he didn't see the barriers which went down.[4] He should quickly drive out from the level crossing through the barrier but instead he went out from the truck and tried to lift the barrier while the truck was left on the rail. On 19 December 2005 he was sentenced to prison for 1 year and 2 months for reckless driving ("vårdslöshet i trafik"), causing death ("vållande till annans död") and causing bodily harm ("vållande till kroppsskada") by Kristianstads tingsrätt.[5]
