The Northern Ireland men's national volleyball team is the national volleyball team of Northern Ireland. They have only competed once in Round One January 2005 of the FIVB World Championships with QUB Graduate Gerry Ford as Head Coach and UUJ 's Nick Wright as captain. They do compete in the CEV European Small Nations division. In 2012 the Junior Men finished 5th in the Finals in Scotland and the Junior Women 3rd in their Qualifier on Malta. Senior Men finished 4th in SCD Qualifiers in June 2012. However, in the lead up to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London none of the Home Nations will compete individually other than Small Nations Divisions.[1] Following the UK Government agency ukSport's 2012 decision not to fund GBR volleyball programmes' pathways to Rio adequately - only months after the outstanding success of volleyball, Beach Volley and Sitting volleyball at the London Games and the leap up the world ranking for all 6 GBR teams in their disciplines - FIVB and CEV the respective world and European authorities declined GBR access to the 2014 World Championships qualifiers but re-opened access to the UK Home Nations. Northern Ireland joined Scotland in entering the 2013 Qualification but not England or Wales (or the Republic of Ireland). NIR play at the end of May in Belgium while Scotland play in Cyprus at the start of June (Men) and end of June (Women) on Malta. (www.cev.lu www.fivb.org www.britishvolleyball.org www.cevscd.org) NIR men and women's teams will be announced at the end of March 2013 after intensive training camps and the Saint Patrick's Day Volleyball Commemorative fixtures in the North this year.
