The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo is the largest Mississippi-owned newspaper and the third largest newspaper in the state. It is distributed in 16 counties in the region with a paid circulation of 30,000 copies daily, 31,000 copies Sunday, and attracts a large audience for its website, djournal.com.
The Journal has published continuously since 1870 and was purchased in 1934 by George McLean, who was the owner for nearly 50 years and emphasized the connection between education and economic development. At his death in 1983, McLean willed the newspaper's stock to the CREATE Foundation, which he had established in 1972 to keep the newspaper locally owned and to promote philanthropy in the region. The paper today is a for-profit business owned by the nonprofit community foundation and continues to emphasize education and economic development in its news coverage and editorials.
What was once a single daily newspaper has expanded into a multi-media parent company, Journal Inc., which includes seven weekly newspapers in Northeast Mississippi, five in suburban Memphis, Tenn., and a weekly statewide business newspaper based in Jackson. Mississippi weeklies owned by Journal Inc. include the Itawamba County Times in Fulton, Pontotoc Progress in Pontotoc, New Albany Gazette in New Albany, Chickasaw Journal in Houston, Monroe Journal in Amory, Southern Sentinel in Ripley, Southern Advocate serving Benton County, Oxford Citizen in Lafayette county, and the Mississippi Business Journal in Jackson . Tennessee publications include the Bartlett Express, Collierville Independent, Millington Star, Oakland News and Shelby Sun Times. Journal Inc. also publishes Mud & Magnolias, a lifestyle magazine about Mississippi and the South, and an assortment of speciality magazines. Journal, Inc. also offers commercial printing for regional publications on traditional newsprint and some glossy magazines. In addition to its publishing business, Journal, Inc. formed a Digital Agency in 2013 Thrive Marketing to design websites, offer social media management, search engine optimization, and general online needs for local businesses. In addition to its publishing business, Journal Inc. also owns and leases commercial real estate near its Tupelo home office.
Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reporters, photographers, editors and designers have won numerous state and regional awards through the years. Currently two reporters are participants in national journalism fellowships – one in health care reporting, the other in criminal justice issues.
