North and South Cowton Community Primary School is located in North Cowton in Richmondshire, North Yorkshire, England.

The school board and school buildings at North and South Cowton primary are mentioned in Bulmer's History and Directory of North Yorkshire, written in 1890.

The school is separated into two separate buildings, The Infant school building and the Primary school building. The two buildings are separated by about 100 metres of public road.

The primary school building dates from the Victorian period, though it has been extensively renovated and extended.

The school's Catchment area includes the villages of North Cowton and South Cowton, the hamlets of Dalton Gates, Atley Hill and Moulton End as well as several isolated farms.

The school was threatened with closure during the late 1980s as the Conservative Government of the time intended to cut the education budget by closing small rural schools with fewer than 30 pupils.

Thankfully the school survived the threat of closure and in 2004 boasted more than 50 pupils. The main reason for this is the increase in the size of North Cowton, thanks to the construction of two new housing estates. Another reason is the schools acceptance of several children from outside the schools catchment area. Since then the opening of a new school at Middleton Tyas and a number of families moving out of the village have seen numbers fall.
