North Lakes is an outer suburb north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Its local government area is the Moreton Bay Region. North Lakes is located approximately 26 km north of the Brisbane central business district. North Lakes has officially been named a suburb, gazetted by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water in February 2006.^[2] The suburb is mostly made up of newly developed housing around the North Lakes Golf Course. At the 2011 Australian Census the suburb recorded a population of 15,046.^[1]

The origin of the suburb name is from the name given to the estate development.^[2]

The suburb includes an abundance of parklands, schools and shops and currently houses 17,000 people, with 25,000 projected by the end of the development. There are also many new facilities in the area, including the North Lakes Community Centre, Pathways Library, Interchange, industrial estate, and Westfield North Lakes. Major tenants of the shopping centre include Target, Coles, Big W, Woolworths, Myer, and other major franchises and boutique stores. A cinema complex is due for completion by end 2016. A 28,000sq m IKEA superstore has been approved for Westfield's stage three development, with an anticipated opening date for 2016. North Lakes is also the site of Queensland's first Costco.

North Lakes Business Park started construction in 2007 and is planned to take seven years to fully complete. It will ultimately create 5,000 jobs, cover 55 hectares and cost $130 million. Construction of a walk-over bridge crossing the Bruce Highway and leading onto a path/corridor that heads to the Dakabin railway station opened on 12 December 2014; the walk/ride will be approximately 2.5 km. The rail line from Petrie to Kippa Ring is due for completion late 2016.

Demographics

In the 2011 Census the population of North Lakes is 15,046, 51.6% female and 48.4% male.^[1] The median/average age of the North Lakes population is 31 years of age, 6 years below the Australian average. 63% of people living in North Lakes were born in Australia. The other top responses for country of birth were England 9.2%, New Zealand 8.7%, South Africa 3.9%, Philippines 1.3%, Scotland 1%. 86.6% of people speak English as their first language 1.5% Afrikaans, 0.8% Hindi, 0.7% Tagalog, 0.7% Spanish, 0.5% German.^[1]

Education

The suburb has numerous state & private primary to senior schools & colleges including North Lakes State College, The Lakes College, Bounty Boulevard. North Lakes State College is made up of two large Campuses. The Main Campus accommodates Prep-Year 9, it is located at the front of the suburb with easy access. The ULC accommodates grades 10-12, and is located across from Westfield in the town centre. The $12 million project was completed December 2007. This is due to be extended to accommodate the unexpected large number of students, in the next 12 months.

With young families throughout the area, North Lakes now has 6 child care and early learning centres and numerous family daycare options.
