North Carolina Highway 44 (NC 44) is a primary state highway in the state of North Carolina. The highway is a temporary designation for the Goldsboro Bypass, which when completed will be rebranded as U.S. Route 70 (US 70).
Route description
NC 44 is a freeway that traverses 3.9 miles (6.3 km), starting from Interstate 795 (I-795) to Wayne Memorial Drive, north of Goldsboro.[2] Mile markers along the route are based off US 70.
History
Construction started on the first section of the Goldsboro Bypass on October 9, 2008.[3] The first phase opened on December 16, 2011. Temporarily assigned the NC 44 designation, the highway will eventually become part of a rerouted US 70 in the area. The project cost $65.5 million and included three interchanges at I-795, US 117 and Wayne Memorial Drive.[2]
NC 44 appeared in the state one time before, from 1930-1994. At its height it connected NC 48, west of Whitakers, to NC 125, in Oak City. In 1994, the route was renumbered to NC 33 and NC 111.[4]
Future
The Goldsboro Bypass is a 20.6-mile (33.2 km) proposed bypass north of the city of Goldsboro. Upon completion of the bypass, US 70 will replace NC 44.[5] The estimated cost for entire project is $234 million; it is broken into four sections:
- West of NC 581 to I-795, construction scheduled to begin in June 2012.
- I-795 to Wayne Memorial Drive (SR 1556), opened as of December 16, 2011.[2]
- Wayne Memorial Drive (SR 1556) to Creek Road (SR 1714), construction started in November 2011.
- Creek Road (SR 1714) to east of Promise Land Road (SR 1323), construction started in November 2011.
