North American Power is a retail energy supplier based in Norwalk, Connecticut.

History

North American Power was founded in 2009 by Kerry Breitbart and Carey Turnbull, who were both formerly oil brokers. The company provides electricity and natural gas to residential and commercial customers in select deregulated energy states. The company also sells Renewable Energy Certificates in all 50 states through their American Wind program.[3][4] North American Power formerly used a multi-level marketing model to sell utilities,[5][6] and as of April 2014, they were #47 on the Direct Selling News Global 100.[1] On January 13, 2015, the company announced that it would be terminating the network marketing division of its company. The company promised to continue paying commissions on existing customers/reps. However, no new clients or representatives could be registered.

Maryland Public Service Commission

In January 2011, the Maryland Public Service Commission (MPSC) began an investigation of the company for misleading sales practices.[5] On June 9, 2011, the company was fined $100,000 by the MPSC.[7][8] On August 16, 2013, the commission closed the file after finding that the company had completed the required remedial measures it had agreed to.[9] In a statement, Breitbart attributed the problems to rapid growth, and stated that the company was improved by its re-examined practices.[10]

Awards and recognition

North American Power was placed at #57 on Forbes' list of "America's Most Promising Companies" in 2011.[11]

The company has also received several Stevie Awards in 2012 and 2013,[12][13][14] and CEO Kerry Breitbart received the 2012 Gold Stevie Award for Executive of the Year in the Energy & Utilities category.[15]

While the fine is significant, we are grateful to the PSC staff for bringing our attention to these matters and for acknowledging that this was not intentional — it was the result of an early stage company experiencing rapid growth. This process has caused us to re-examine our practices and hire some of the best compliance and energy experts in the business — we are a better company because of it.
